Great timing, I just started rewatching this. On episode 4 and it's even more kino than I remembered
literally nothing fucking happens: the show
>>220958146im watching it for the first time, was sad to see wild bill go EVEN though i knew about the dead man's hand, i was hoping they would sorta re-write history just to have my nigga keith carradine hicock around for much longer. i just watched the chinese episode and im still having fun
>>220958105>>220958146Just started rewatching myself; why the fuck did get canceled again? Was it just to based for normie audiences or was there some behind the scenes financial that killed it??(Never looked into it myself)

>>220958192I remember when I first watched it I knew nothing about Wild Bill's story so his death was a huge shock. Although I was also shocked by Jack getting released the following episode, even though it was telegraphed heavily the whole time. Maybe I'm just a hooplehead

>>220958543Ha! I know that bitch. She's the retard from "Facts of Life". Jo, Blair, Tooty, Ms. Garrett. Can't remember the other one but the actresses name was Mindy Cohn.Apparently they were going to make a reboot and everything lined up, the Blair actress kept dragging her feet. Turns out she had her own plans about a Behind The Scenes autobiography of the show. Neither projects got made but the OG stars are pissed that Blair tried to do them dirty like that.
>>220958422The character is based on a real life person. The real Al Swearengen established the Gem Theater in 1876.

>>220958913>Anon made it, Chief
>>220958200Iirc, the cast had only been set for 3-year contracts. By the time seaosn two came around HBO wasn't sure if it would renew, between Deadwood, Rome, and all their other massive money-sinks. Negotiations fell apart, and Milch got John From Cincinnati as a consolation prize. Retarded cocksuckers.

I told her I was a big fan, but I hadn’t seen her in much since The Facts of Life. She was recovering from spinal surgery, picking up her medication. I asked if she would be in the show I was working on. She said, “This is a pharmacy, right?” She was the first person cast. We met at my office at Paramount and talked about the time period and what it would be like to be disabled then and I asked her to write what she thought her character would be like. She sent me twenty pages and she was a great writer. I told her I liked ninety-nine percent of it but I didn’t like the name. Geri wanted her to be called Crazy Kate. I said, “No. Her name is going to be Jewel.”

>>220959039They killed Carnivale, too. It really lowered my opinion of HBO. You can't promote yourself as a premium channel, brag about all your cool shows and then drop everything with little or no resolution or warning because you decided to get cheap all of a sudden. It's like a five star restaurant not serving filet any more because they didn't want to to buy expensive beef but wanting to charge you $85 for chicken instead. Or in HBO's case, Entourage. >>220962336It's definitely funny seeing that, like Cy thinks he's such a badass but when men with real power show up it reveals him to be the little bitch he really is. The bit where General Crook coldly says "If I was sheriff of this town I'd hang you" then walks out is so fucking good. First time Cy is genuinely at a loss for words.
>>220960786Yeah but the kino scenes being so spread out is what made the show feel so real, because it's not meant to be an action show or even a traditional Wild West show, it's basically just a slow character drama that happens to be set in the 1870s. And the amount of violence is pretty realistic, actual gunfights and showdowns were pretty rare, whereas knifings and beatings were more common. The fact that characters in the show make such a huge deal and remember for ages the showdown between Bullock, Hikock and that thug in the pilot emphasises this. And it being rare is what makes it so cool, if scenes like that happened every episode it'd get boring quick.
>>220967278Cy being this suave devil type as a public facing persona, but acting as a tantrum throwing child in private is one of the best parts about him. Tossing shit, crying, getting mad, bullying people; he just wanted to be a big fish in a small pond but mom wouldn't let him.
Season 1 is probably the best written season of TV I've ever seen and it's not even close. Genuinely never seen anything else with dialogue like that, just insane. Season 2 was okay but dragged in places. Season 3 sucked except for a couple of scenes.I prefer to view Deadwood mostly just as a single-season miniseries.

An educated and thoroughbred nihilist, he completely puzzles the merely ruthless and immoral Tolliver during their partnership. Past satisfaction. Past warmth, or cold or comfort. Past love. But past surprise? What an endlessly unfolding tedium life would then become. He is strangely relatable in his being such a weird sperg, while also Charlie should have beat him 10 more times. He wants to be normal so bad but he's just mentally ill. I can't help to be sympathetic to him even if he's such a vile piece of shit. Love Wolcott. Still can't understand they cancelled this.
>>220977933Yeah, his conversation with Hearst is kind of heartbreaking, he's trying his best to make him understand as a sort of apology but he can't quite get there. I also like that Garret Dillahunt is almost crying while trying to tell him. >Still can't understand they cancelled this.Milch is a weird dude, and seems very arrogant, which I suppose he has the talent to support, but I think he just became too much of a bother. If you watch the behind the scenes and interviews with him he essentially ousted the first director of the series, then made sure that any further directors were subservient yesmen. It all worked out in the quality of the show but that type of attitude isn't great when dealing with producers and he appears to have been unable or unwilling to be diplomatic. The actors and crew also talk about how the show faced delay after delay during shooting because Milch would rewrite scripts endlessly, changing and adding scenes, and often would rewrite a scene an hour or less before it was scheduled to film. That probably cost a lot of money.Honestly he is a really smart guy but if you do watch interviews with him he frequently goes on long diatribes which are not really relevant to the topic he's addressing, or are only relevant in extremely tangential ways. He gets lost in his own thoughts a lot and his ability to communicate an idea suffers for it.Still sad he got dementia, he was a great writer.
>>220978181Got to leave a real gem behind though. Miserable fate but being remembered for something like Deadwood is pretty damn nice. Also, one of my favourite Wolcott moments is during the bike ride, he is trying to get a better look and kinda awkwardly smiles. Just a little tease that maybe he could be a normal guy, then it immediately heads into the murder conspiracy.

Even the ones who try to be as even handed and objective as possible, still have a tendency for self flagellation and a deference to other cultures perspectives.

>>220985988Well, he kind of famously died in the camp. It's what everyone knows about Deadwood. Milch wanted to get it out of the way early, as the show was about the camp's untold story, not the one thing everybody knows.

>>220977814What do you mean? They want actual gimps to be cast as gimps. You're confused. No one would have any problem with Jewel then or now.
>>220986986nta, but while i agree she'd still get the casting today, they'd probably go out of their way to mollycoddle her portrayal, which isn't totally unique to her. you wouldnt get the fat jokes made at mose's expense either (which is really just how the actor looks in reality). people just dont have the stomach for bants anymore
>>220987021I think HBO does what they want, then and now. I don't happen to share the sentiment so many of you on this website have that everything is ruined and "woke".
>>220987082sure, they can do whatever they want. there are no actual restrictions for them legally or privately but what we're talking about are people's current sensibilities and what they find appropriate or not, which is highly determinant of what sort of content gets made. i think you're very much burying your head in the sand if you are genuinely trying to make the case that the social atmosphere was the same then as it is now. are posters here perhaps too alarmist these days? probably. but does that mean they have no grounds to be? probably not
>>220986537It would have been way better. There would be a badass shootout every episode
>>220958316People didn't like Bullock, but I like his particular barely constrained sort of rage. He looks like could explode at any moment so he comes across as awkward trying to keep his attitude in check.
>>220987448If you can cultivate Bullock's manner of walking you will never be stopped for any reason for the rest of your life
>>220987448I liked him, he showed that most 'western heroes' were ultimately autistic rageheads who, where the rubber meets the road, were still decent white folk who would do the Christian thing when necessary but are still heavily flawed characters.Guys like Wild Bill were based but also a little psychotic.

>>220958230i love deadwood but Sopranos absolutely mogs Rome and is easily as good as Deadwood
One thing I think doesn't get talked about enough is the awkwardness of social interactions. A kind of "sweet" awkwardness is at least half of Utter's character.
>>220988555>Deadwood>remotely as good as the Sopranos
>>220988565Deadwood has the best line-to-line writing in the history of television. It loses to Sopranos on overall narrative but it also excels it in other areas, like performances from actors (only a couple of guys on Sopranos turn in top, top tier dramatic performances, almost every other actor on Deadwood is giving a legendary performance)

The show has a lot of attention to detail in that regard.
>>220987702> the scene with her exposed, unshaved pitsfuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck
>>220989242Halfway to post limit, best time of the thread to go fuck yerself.
>>220989242the scenes with Hearst and Jarry were some of my favorite in the show. like when he starts pretending to be a baby bird out of nowhere
>>220989406I love how pissed off and tired Bullock was in this episode, he had to break up TWO attempted lyncings within minures of each other, and you can tell he was so pissed off he just wanted to blow some motherfucker's head off. I fucking love how formal and proper he is with his language when dispersing the riotous attemblies, though. Season 2 Bullock is peak Bullock.
>>220989544Season 3 sucked overall compared to previous seasons (especially season 1) but there can be no debate or doubt that Hearst is the single best antagonist/villain ever put on TV screens. He absolutely fucking owned every single scene he was in and it was so cool seeing all the big shots and "heroes" of previous sesasons utterly humbled and crushed by sheer power. Felt so unconventional and brutally real, especially the ending, the most blue-balled conclusion to a story of all time. Just insanely great character and performance, the hardest "carried the entire show" performance until Anthony Star in The Boys.
>>220987448>>220987508Very good interpretations. The point of both Bullock and Hikock was to show that even the most objectively honourable and just men in this era - as these two men were - both struggled with their own demons, be it alcoholism, rage, lust, etc.Like yeah, absolutely NO ONE in this show or world is perfect. But if I had to choose two men to defend me, I'd choose them without hesitation. They might be assholes in their personal lives but they will still do the right thing at the end of the day.Sometimes the best thing you can hope for is an asshole that just does his job so well that he still helps you out.
>>220987157Historically, Hikock didn't kill anyone in Deadwood, his last kill was before he showed up in camp. That scene where him and Bullock gun down tne piece of shit that killed Sophia;s family was 100% fictional but still cool as fuck and showed how badass both men were. It was basically just fan-service.IRL Hikock was washed up and depressed and borderline suicidal at this point and the show depicts that very accurately. He wasn't even "main character material" in his own view at this point.
>>220975340I do like the show, but it is honestly over-written.That a fair few characters would and could talk like that all the time, sure, chalk that up to eloquence and smarminess. But having every retard halfwit speak like a bad period piece because>well umm they took inspiration from letters from that timeyeah and do you speak the way you do in letters/emails? Its the 1800s version of HR/therapy-talk. After a while it grates on you.
>>220989903Season 1 was good and found an appropriate balance with the characters where the upper-class/educated characters spoke proper and the lower-class ones spoke poorly. But seasons 2-3 made EVERRY character speak like that and it became jarring and weird, all because people praised the dialogue above all else. That's one of many reasons why season 1 is vastly superior to the others.
>>220988021I had forgotten how much I disliked this worthless bitch. I cant think of a single good thing she did or said, mostly because it was impossible to hear what she said beneath all that slurring. And it didnt even sound good. Like a woman trying to do a very drunk John Wayne impersonation
>>220989903my only answer to that is these mining camps were far from normal places
>>220989903didn't the dumb characters poorly mimic the eloquent way of speaking?

>>220983990That's rough, to be forced to express yourself like a retarded person but in fact be perfectly normal inside
>>220988563>>220958105Almost every character has this wonderful bumbling humanity to them even when they're being tough or violent they can't help fuck up a little and get embarrassed it's amazing. >>220987573at least do it justice, anon>I am.... OOOOOoooodiIIIIiiiiiiinn
>>220989903It does seem very unlikely that they really talked like that but it's cool so I don't care. Basically this >>220990738
More shows should learn from Deadwood that people enjoy listening to dialogue that is strange or unique, rather than utilitarian, or worse yet utilitarian with quips thrown in. I am going to dress like Shakespeare and toss all the bad writing in the sea.
>>220991687ridiculous. the audience needs to be reminded IN DIALOGUE at least three time whats even happening.
>>220991715I don't think they need that, I think audiences can be expected to figure out the plot without being told, I just don't think they need to be reminded.... Wait.My own word and wit betray my stated purpose, though come a turn of the watch, maybe God could visit a miracle upon us and we all cry "Hallelujah!" so even a dotard can find a joke if it bites him on the ass. Much better.
>>220962249I'll be in the same room as him in the near future. What shall I say to Wu?

>>220991931"Did you enjoy playing the comedic Wu who didn't speak English, or the more serious community leader Wu who dealt with the San Francisco Cocksucker?" I enjoy comedy characters but the dramatic element of those two seemed very interesting, and it's always bothered me subtitles for the Chinese conversation is rare.
