And the amount of violence is pretty realistic, actual gunfights and showdowns were pretty rare, whereas knifings and beatings were more common. The fact that characters in the show make such a huge deal and remember for ages the showdown between Bullock, Hikock and that thug in the pilot emphasises this. And it being rare is what makes it so cool, if scenes like that happened every episode it'd get boring quick.
