I don't think the Illuminati would kill Kubrick over Eyes Wide Shut, it's far from an "expose," all of the coded allusions to things like child trafficking remained intact in the final film.
Spielberg got done dirty by Kubrick fans regarding this film claiming the schmaltzy parts are on him. The last 20 mins are Kubrick's intended ending, the one thing he directed for this film before dying was Robin Williams' goofy cameo, and Spielberg actually made the tone darker and added things like the Flesh Fair. The schmaltzy parts were in Kubrick's vision for the film and probably are why he thought it would be better off as a Spielberg project.

I love this movie with a passion. Its the only movie that made me shed a bittersweet tear at the end. He finally got what he wanted. Only for a day, but he finally got what he wanted.
