People hating Joss over being a femminist and a single quote don´t even know what good writing looks like. Like it or not the truth is Joss used to be a good television writer. Quips aside his characters used to grow, transform and become more complex from season to season. They attained depth through the accumulation of experiences and he knew how to balance those relatable aspects of their personalities with the worlds they inhabited. His visual storytelling skills were also pretty good and not common at all for TV at the time.

The combination of all these things allowed for strong buildups and some strong moments if one got the balance right. Most of the writers copying his style however took the worst aspects of his style and discarded the ones that made it worth anything. Even Whedon himself eventually lost sense of that balance. His style certainly was not meant to become the template of all blockbuster slop though, i can agree with you there.
