Dishonest slop. They made the Chernobyl Incident seem like a big awful thing, but they only tell you at the end that just a handful of people died from it. They make it out to be this horrible tragedy.

The figures depend on the political agenda of the person citing them. According to Greenpeace, Chernobyl is responsible for a total of one million deaths—a figure that even I consider far too high. But bear in mind: the numbers are not high partly because no one lives there anymore. Yet, had nothing been done—had the power plant simply been left to bleed out—the death toll would indeed have reached that level. Nor should the economic damage be ignored; some have said that Chernobyl was the final death blow to the USSR. So, "big awful thing" is not an exaggeration.
>>
>>220977882
oh even though they had to evacuate and relocate millions and make 1000km exclusion zone due to the most radioactive place on the planet but only a couple people died so it wasnt really a big deal

The point was it COULD'VE been a big awful thing, but it wasn't because of the sacrifices of many brave people.
The show exaggerates the worst case scenario quite a bit, however. But at the time they were in uncharted territory and had every reason to expect the worst.

I couldn't pick mushrooms as a kid because apparently they contained radiation from chernonyl even though I live in a completely different country which is pretty tragic if you ask me.

I just hope this has made people more aware that Chernobyl kind of was the realistic worst case scenario, a combo of commie corner-cutting and incompetence that couldn't even have happened in western countries back then. Nuclear power is the second safest, only surpassed by solar in that regard. If world leaders are smart they'll start buying as much uranium and thorium they can get their hands on before the prices sky-rocket.

>>220977882
>They made the Chernobyl Incident seem like a big awful thing
They didn't really. The show focuses on the technical and bureaucratic reasons that caused the explosion. Along with a good dose of horror thrown in for good measure.
>>
>>220979657
That happened almost 30 years earlier and made everyone realize that reactors needed pressure sealed containment structures.

we're getting pretty damn good about reusing materials from solar panels and lead+acid/cobalt/lithium batteries.
it's not perfect but it's not like recycled plastic where it all just goes to the garbage heap anyway.
>>
>>220980118
The ultimate problem is that you just can't get that much energy from the sun compared to nuclear. They should be used in tandem, but solar, wind and hydro could never support an entire nation's grid by themselves.
>>
>>220980031
Nta but hydro requires dams which can fail catastrophically. Wind turbines kill millions of birds every year, but that's not really all too significant compared to other human influenced deaths.

besides nuclear, hydro is the most efficient energy, the main problem with hydro is delivering that energy long distances from the hydro plants.
for solar it's just a matter of surface area, we have so much open space in the US that have solid sunlight hours, it's mostly a matter of actually scaling up panel and battery production.

pre-war ukraine had the best internet infrastructure in east euro by a long shot.
they were closer to western countries than any other ex-soviet/east euro shithole in that regard.
the problem with ukraine is the corruption, they're right up there with russia and the koreas with how corrupt their society is which is what kept them out of nato and will continue to keep them from joining nato.
ukraine was never even in consideration for joining nato due to their corruption levels.

That was literally Burguerstan propaganda.
It was bad, not gonna lie, but it was contained, and little harm was done.
But the antinuclear on top, that the KGB knew it would happen, was the real paganda.
It literally scared the world out of nuclear poweplants, MORE THAN THE ACTUAL NUCLEAR BOMBORINOS ACTUALLY DROPPING AND KILLING 200k CHINKS
And that propaganda was 80% North America, 20% eurotards
And it literally backfired because their orange man literally wants to get back to coal mining

Mazin made a whole bunch of crappy schlock before Chernobyl. The best thing he'd written before it was fucking Scary Movie 3.

That said I thought TLOU S1 was exceptional, and that TLOU S2 actually had source material that could have made a much better show than S1 but ended up being shit for some reason.

it's kino if you turn your brain off but it becomes annoying if you think about anything they portray because there's too much self indulgent gay fan fiction and then dweebs are parroting events in the show as if it's 100% historically accurate. it's unfortunately a really well made show where its version of events become the canon that people remember. why romanticise a loser like legasov and invent things he did. all of the people in the show are portrayed as complete opposites for some reason. and then the gay made up bridge scene, making up the helicopter crash, making up the irradiated baby stuff, the gay shooting dogs dramatization. and then the irony is that the show is thematically about the cost of lies

It's a great show, but they completely made up a bunch of shit that never happened, and one of the main characters never existed. And it probably made a lot of people anti-nuclear instead of anti-commie like it should have. Watch it for the memes. Don't take any of it seriously.

It's a bigger budget show following the same narrative arc as Citizen X (another HBO miniseries) where a brilliant maverick has to gain the support and help of a communist party official to bypass the secret police and byzantine Soviet party politicking.

The funniest thing about both shows is that they're set just before 1990 but portray the KGB and Soviet society as if it were still the 1930s Stalinist USSR during the purges with secret agents were following everyone and could execute you at a moment's notice for not praising Lenin hard enough.

But an helicopter did crash on the NPP, it's still there...
And soviets did kill people's pets and obviously people would'nt be happy about this.
The soviets were evil by incompetence (or just evil because uneducated hicks given positions of power) just like the nu-soviets that invaded ukraine.
And guess what, today russia is still a shithole just like the urss because they can't stop lying to everyone (even to Putin since he thought his army had a real chance).
The soviets just don't learn.

Except most of those are framed around personal accounts of what happened by eye-witnesses. The actual documentation of events was actually worse.

In the original documents a technician out of the control room to go to the reactor, and a second one hesitated and then chased after him. The first went around a corner and through double-doors with the second maybe five paces away. The explosion occurred, the second guy got back up rounded the corner opened the doors and there was nothing there but a three-story drop.

>they're set just before 1990 but portray the KGB and Soviet society as

I was there in the mid-80s for an extended period. It was exactly like that. I have yet to see western fiction that’s been less than 80-90% accurate. Even The Americans portrayal of *SSR life was accurate. Right down to the 1950s black sedans driving around, army formations in the park on the regular, etc.

>Isn't that how it works?
Not at all, but a century of propaganda has misled a lot of people who really should know better. It would only be dangerous if someone was still covered with radioactive dust or something like that. That could contaminate bedsheets and the like and you could breathe it in if you were in close contact. But once they've been decontaminated there's no danger. It's like being worried that getting too close to a burn victim will also burn you. Completely ridiculous.

The irradiated baby is meant to represent the entire millennial generation. Women who got salted elements built-in in their bones ultimately passed them to their firstborn children because kids sucks up all kind of nutrients from mother's during pregnancy.
