You can reverse some damage, really you can reverse a lot if you really work at it. Losing limbs to necrosis doesn't come without lots of warnings. Most people in Patrice's situation have had significant obvious health issues and knew about their diabetes for years, sometimes decades before these really bad outcomes start rearing their heads. Massive amounts of people around the world live totally normal lives with diabetes. A decent chunk manage their diabetes without supplemental insulin at all just by being disciplined with their diet and lifestyle. That's the exact reason it's such a shame how Patrice went out. It was 100% avoidable and he had years and years and years to make the necessary changes. If he would have put in the work starting 2 years before his death it is almost a certainty he would be alive today. He did almost 20 years of damage to his body with that diabetes but much of that could have been reversed and in the end it may have only knocked a couple years off his ideal maximum lifespan barring environmental insult.

Ozempic was originally intended for cases like Patrice's. There's a very high likelihood it would have worked for him, but he wouldn't have had to do something that drastic if he didn't want to. Just half-ass fixing his diet and cutting out the worst of the worst stuff he was eating could have extended his lifespan by decades.
