Just put on episode 4, but had to stop to make this thread. So episodes 1 & 2 were phenomenal, and they both strictly followed real people. But episode 3 was kinda shit, and about half of it's runtime followed fictional characters.Like, Donna DeAngelo is a fictional prostitute they used in place of the real victim, Yvonne Peterson. Why they replaced her I'm not sure, might be since her family's Catholic, but regardless the character ends up coming across written in a much more heavy-handed way than the real prostitutes previously followed who were based on real people, despite those prostitutes better conveying the message the showrunners were likely going for. Likewise the character of WPC Jill Adams was totally fictional and her written ridiculously heavy-handed to the point of being patronizing, and was ultimately just padding that didn't advance the plot. It's actually super interesting how much more effort and ambiguity went into the real people, versus how sloppy and forceful the fictional characters are, and how the former is so much better at promoting the message the latter is trying so hard to. With the real people, I was absolutely agreeing with the show's message about prostitutes being people and women in the '70s having it rough, but with the latter I was just being patronized and treated like an imbecile. You can tell the writer and director need real people to work off of and are relatively incompetent on their own.
Is dat da guvnah
