What are you working on today?

I applied to a student theater group that was looking for writers. By the end of June I'll know if I'm going to write their next play! It's not exactly Hollywood...

68 pages into my low budget innawoods script about zoomers. Though, my software says I only have 63 min of screentime. Idk how it's calculating that though.
Also started sketching out some points for other script ideas I had. I got a neat horror idea earlier this week, though it's probably a bit of a higher budget.

Does anyone know of any YT channels with good screenwriting advice? I don't care if it's selling consulting or whatever, just something with useful advice I can put on while eating dinner.

I wrote and shot a 65 page script last year. My first full edit of the film is 1h50.
Don't trust software. Just take 5-10 pages of your script and record yourself saying the lines with an ideal rhythm, leaving room for the actions. That should give you a baseline for how your writing correlates to actual screentime.
Alternatively, write and produce some short films for a more accurate metric

Thanks. Yeah I'll have to do a full read-through once I finish the first draft and time myself. I know I'm a few pages past where my outline says the scenes should be, so I'll have some cutting to do.
Still not 100% settled on the ending yet. I wrote the "good" ending in the outline, but idk if I want to make it darker.

Is it okay if I use proper nouns/names in a spec script? Like "iPhone" or "OnlyFans"?

There's only one rule to screenwriting: there are no rules
I meme but also, this is legitimately true

I mean like... for commercial viability. Though I guess if necessary it can be swapped out with some fake name or genericized term

Write the script you want to write and then let the producer worry about the fine details.

I've written three story bibles so far, on world building, characters, factions, themes, etc but I'm still having a hard time writing the fucking thing. So I've decided to spend more time studying scripts that I like, writing down what resonates with me, the overall structure, plot points etc. I know that I'm on the right track but deep down I feel that this just an excuse for my lack of confidence to actually start writing.

How do you write a story bible without writing the story?
Are you sure you even have a story you want to tell? (As opposed to a setting you find comfort in)

What software?

I write in VSCode in the Fountain format and use the Better Fountain extension for syntax highlighting, PDF exporting, and some other helpful stuff.
https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=piersdeseilligny.betterfountain
It's open source, so I could go look at the code to figure it out. It has this method for dialog:

Not sure where the action calculation is.

Writing screenplays is a waste of time, nobody reads screenplays for fun and hollywood doesn't hire based on specs anymore and hasn't for decades, there's also no website where you can share your screenplays for people to read because there's no market for that, unless you're already in the industry or know people who are willing to read your shit, there's no point to it

Only worth doing if you know you're going to shoot your short or movie

They always talk about actors being prima donnas and a handful, but from my expirence it's always been crew. Primarily the camera opperators and sfx artist.
