He was a slave to Watto, to the Jedi, and ultimately to Palpatine/his own fears and then a slave to his own guilt (that's the most realistic part of it, it's not the bad things done to you that are impossible to overcome, but the bad things you've done)

That was the point, the Jedi were unbalanced in their view of the force and Luke actually having emotions was the "right" way, acting out of a true love for his friends and ultimately his father. It's possible the "force" actually did intend for the Jedi to be wiped out because they were so entrenched in their ways (no not balancing the numbers)
