T2 is perhaps the worst sequel of all time. It reduced a genuinely terrifying horror antagonist to the wacky sidekick of a literal child.

Only women and gays think T2 is the better film.

Oh to be a kid again.
T2 is fucking great.
>>
1 > 2 > 3 > Salvation > Dark Fate > Genisys

2 was my favourite for the longest time, but rewatching 1 made me appreciate just how scary it was and how good Arnie actually was
3 is underrated and has some great action, the chase sequence with the crane thing is incredible
Salvation I can totally see why people hate it, but I liked it
Dark Fate had some good and a lot of shit, it shat all over the story, but the new terminator model was cool and linda hamilton was badass
Genisys was straight up garbage, absolutely nothing redeemable about it
>>
>>220991927
It was already ruined by having Arnold star as the terminator. Originally the plan was to have Lance Henriksen play the terminator. He would be a normal looking guy who could blend in, then be an effective killing machine when needed.

T2 improved this aspect of the terminator, by having Robert Patrick play the antagonist. Arnold Schwarzenegger is a goofball and turn any serious movie into an accidental comedy.
>>
>>220992263
there would be a T2 is henrickson was the headliner, it would just be another sci-fi b-movie
>>
>>220991927
OP here, forgot to mention that im trans and jewish
>>
>>220992292
Calling it a b-movie is a bit silly. I would rather say it would have been something of a hidden gem if it only existed as the 1984 original.

I think the existence of sequels often ruins good movies by explaining too much. I certainly think the sequels to T2 and tv-series have negatively affected the first two movies.

Is there a scene in T1 with Arnold shooting a mini gun at cop cars? No? Then it's not better
>>
>>220992127
T1 is my favorite, but this take doesn't add up. T1 is the one with all the romance and a big girl in a big world, whereas T2 has a minigun, a Harley and way more explosions.
>>
>>220992263
>Arnold Schwarzenegger is a goofball and turn any serious movie into an accidental comedy.
GTFO, Arnold was great in T1. You would not find him goofy if you had seen T1 when it was new and did not know who he was. This is a you problem.
>>
>>220992586
It does add up. 80s action movies had audience inserts for main characters. Men who watched The Terminator went out the theater thinking they could beat a terminator and then fuck the girl.

Women doesn't like getting fucked during a crisis like this, so T1 is just weird to them. T2 is a family movie and women who watch it think they could be like Sarah Conner.
>>
>>220992650
No. He looks cool to a kid. He's big and fires an AR-18 with one hand and a shotgun with the other. It's goofy and stupid to an adult.

Lance Henriksen would have brought something much better to the movie if he played the terminator.

Well duh, he's a terminator. How does being big make him goofy? Even now, I find him scary after his eyebrows have been burned off.

T1 is better to me because of its sublime atmosphere, raw intensity owing to Bien's performance, and how it seamlessly blends four genres (action, sci-fi, horror, romance). T2 is awesome, but T1 is a transcendental art film masquerading as an action movie.

OP is 100%-correct. And Brad Fiedel's music score - quite possibly the worst score of all-time - only adds to how atrocious this film is.
>>
>>220991927
I kinda liked how the genre changes.
>T1 = Horror movie
>T2 = action movie
and where they fucked up is that T3 is also an action movie and every other terminator movie after that is also an action movie.
imo they should have tried something new for T3 or went back to Horror.
>>
>>220992875
Terminators are supposed to be good at infiltrating. We see Arnold being a massive weirdo, then we see his body builder friend in the future going in to a resistence base and firing a plasma minigun.

It's not until T2 that we see a terminator choosing to pose as a cop in clean clothes and approach people in a reasonable way.

In T1 Arnold is dressed in punk clothes and when he goes to kill the first Sarah Conner he uses his weird austrian accent and just says "Sarah Connor?".

In T2 the T1000 is manipulative. Asks for a photo of John and compliments him, then goes back and just murder Todd and Janelle when it will benefit the mission.

T1 is much more goofy.

why does the T-800 use its finger to point at names in the phone book like a human, when a machine with optical sensors and computer vision could scan and OCR the entire page instantly without any physical gesture?
>>
>>220993259
hes an infiltrator, people would get suspicious if he doesnt put his finger on there and it might be how skynet programmed it to fit in better.
>>
>>220993082
Both T1 and T2 acknowledge this though, that the T-800 is an improvement on the very conspicuous T-600, and that the T-1000 is an even more advanced model than the clunkier T-800. T-800 being bulky also makes sense, since its metal endoskeleton is bulky. Also, reddit spacing, major ick.

>>

>Nobody cares or even thinks to look at that,
skynet doesnt know that tho.
they reconstructed him so he can fit into a world that skynet only knows from descriptions.
>>
youre right. its not horror anymore. doesnt make it bad desu. same with aliens, it turns into actionslop, but far from bad. aliens also still retains the horror elements despite well armed grunts. but still, i agree. T2 is silly
>>
>>220993319
That's something different. They mention how the first terminators had rubber skin and you could see they weren't human very easily.

The issue I brought up is that Arnold is a body builder with a weird accent. He grabs a punk jacket and wears it thoughout the movie, and he makes no effort to blend in.
>>
>>220991927
The writing is a lot worse than I remembered when I rewatched it a month ago.
>>
>>220992904
>>220993212
>>220993259

All of these things are just because it's a movie, and it wouldn't work for an audience if the movie wasn't full of these kinds of things.

The two movies also have time traveller paradoxes.

If the movies had gone for realism, then the terminator would have just produced some chemical weapon and released it over the city.

Again, they acknowledge this. At no point does the movie say that the T-800 can seamlessly blend in and act perfectly human, it only looks human. You're just complaining for the sake of complaining and criticizing the film for what it isn't, rather than for what it is. What's even the point of arguing like this?
>>
>>220992971
>T2 is awesome, but T1 is a transcendental art film masquerading as an action movie.
This is pretentious bollocks but there is a little bit of truth in it.

T1 is much better than it ought to be, and the thing that makes it great is the *feel*.

Didn't JC say he got the inspiration from a dream of a robot rising from a fire? The film wasn't created by thinking of a cute premise (killer robot goes back in time!) and seeing where it led. It was created by someone with an archetypal image — a hellish skeleton of death — who then invented a premise to explain it. Pretty much the opposite process.
>>
>>220994210
The thread is about a complain on the terminator series, so it's natural that the comments would contain more complaints.

It makes no sense that Skynet would model the T-800 after Arnold and keep his weird austrian accent. It makes no sense that the terminator makes no effort to blend in.

Lance Henriksen would have made much more sense and make the movie a better horror movie as OP liked.

What they acknowledge in the film is that the first terminators had rubber skin. Kyle explicitly says that terminators are infiltration units, and it's showed how they use dogs to find them out.

In the tv show, we even see a terminator that has a job and a wife in order to blend in and wait for its mission.

>This is pretentious bollocks but there is a little bit of truth in it.
>T1 is much better than it ought to be, and the thing that makes it great is the *feel*.
It's not bollocks, but I agree the wording is pretentious. I could have just said T1 has great vibes, and the meaning is the same, but hey, whatever, I'm gay.
>>
Back when it came out the consensus was around the lines of Furlong being unsufferable and the terminator being his nanny was ridiculous, but SFX were revolutionary and it was one of the biggest blockbusters of the decade.
>>
>>220994592
>It makes no sense that Skynet would model the T-800 after Arnold and keep his weird austrian accent. It makes no sense that the terminator makes no effort to blend in.
You are acting as if making a lifelike cyborg that perfectly mimics human mannerisms is an easy thing for an inhuman AI to do. Yet again, the movies acknowledge the limitations of each model and that the designs keep improving, and you are yet again criticizing the movies for what they are not instead of what they are. And no, Lance Henriksen would not make more sense, because the T-800 endoskeleton is really bulky, so it's unavoidable for it to resemble a large man like Arnold.
>>

This

>>220992065
T3 isn't even canon afaik
>>
>>220991927
And it created a new horrifying antagonist. T1000. The T1000 can't be beaten by the same means as a T800 or T850. It required a very specific set of circumstances to be destroyed and is thus far more dangerous.
>>
>>220991927
Take a hike, bozo.
>>
>>220994875
That's like The Thing taking the form of Jar Jar Binks and then say "it's not easy for an alien to know what a human is supposed to look and act like". Arnold is a massive goofball and all his movies are campy because of him. Compare The Terminator with Alien. If Arnold had been in Alien that movie would have been another goofy Arnie movie.
>>
when did james cameron turn into such an annoying piece of shit feminist?
>>
>>220995011
>bringing up a totally different movie with a different monster that works differently from Skynet
And yet again, you are criticizing the movie for what it isn't rather than what it is. Starting to sound like a broken record here, but you just keep repeating the same mistake.
>Arnold is a massive goofball and all his movies are campy because of him.
Again, this is a you problem, because you can't unsee Arnold as a one-liner spouting pop culture icon. His performance is really convincing, but you are free to point out any scenes where he's out of character and acts like Jar Jar, as you put it.
