She was meant to replace Indy. If you look at all her traits, they're basically modifications of Indy's. In it for money at first (saving the world/preservation of artifacts later), young sidekick who drives a vehicle, sidekick (like Marion) has romantic interests despite being a bit young, issues with her dad being obsessed with a particular artifact, etc. She was basically engineered to get ahead of the complaints people had with Rey by giving her straight parallels with Indy if anyone tried to complain.

Rumors of the original ending had her replacing Indy through time shenanigans and doing some of his feats like getting the golden fertility idol, but all we've gotten towards hard confirmations is that John Williams said they drastically re-did the ending and he had to re-do the music for it.

I had similar experiences with Toy Story 4 and The Incredibes 2.
They are not such trainwrecks like the sequel trilogy and whatever they are still doing with Star Wars, but completely unnecessarry films that left a bad taste. Well, Toy Story 4 did make me angry because they fucked up Woody's character, I'm lying. But demoralizing all of them. Shit you prefer to forget. With Star Wars it's impossible to forget it.
One would question if this is simply the product of incompetence trying to make corporative money off good sagas or they are actively trying to demoralize and destroy the we had during our childhoods.
