A treat visually, but one of Kubrick's worst.

Not at all. Once one has actually watched all of Kubrick's feature films, thought seriously about them and compared them all to each other both honestly and thoughtfully, this ends up merely confirming, for the right-thinking viewer (not you), that the popular opinion is true: 2001 is easily one of Kubrick's best films, and arguably his very best (Barry Lyndon is the other major contender here, but one can be forgiven for having special partiality toward The Shining or Eyes Wide Shut, another two of his more interesting films). Provided, of course, that your sensibility and judgment aren't horrible (this is the problem you're having).

It must also be borne in mind that Kubrick took a while to hit his stride, so certain earlier works are beneath mention. When you're playing the rankings game there's really only seven or eight of the thirteen films that anyone is really thinking about (Lolita is easily among his worst "real" movies after the first few student-tier efforts). In fact, this just takes away further ground from your horrible bait opinion.
