The Thin Red Line is kino up until the last act with the river scene. There's no sense of place or wonder that everything preceding this built up. The river and ensuing scenes may as well be nowhere at all for how not beautiful or considered the shots are, Witt's sacrifice, etc. It picks back up again at the end with the >Who were you?bit, but even then it's still not up to snuff.
