>>221006066Bloody Moon is the most gimmicky of them but it has a really interesting surreal atmosphere kind of like an Argento film plus a crazy soundtrack. The Hitcher is just a classic everyone needs to see, especially since it recently got a new transfer that looks incredible. Final Terror is IMO the best deep woods slasher. It does kind of what the original F13 did where they just actually went out to the woods to film so it has a bunch of natural atmosphere that works.
For me it's Italian horror.

I'd break down the genre like this. Maybe 5% of the genre is actually good and you can easily recommend to casual horror fans. Your BWP, Noroi, etc Then you have about 10% that are technically well made but just iterating. For example Willow Creek is a near shot for shot rip of BWP but it's made by people who know how to make a movie so it still seems fine if you're new to FF and 1st person narrative horror (this includes creepypastas, nosleep stories, etc) Then you have another 10% like Howard's Mill which looks kind of ass and has some real believability issues (eg very fake looking missing posters/news reports) since it's made by amateurs but the concept is actually really strong and there's still a lot of effort put in. They have "soul" if you will. Then you have the remaining 75% of the genre that's literally just people both ripping off something else and not having the skills or willingness to try and make it look half as good as the thing they're ripping off. I guess this is generally true for horror in general but it feels especially obvious in found footage since there's practically no barrier to entry unlike say a creature feature where you would definitely need an actual budget and crew.
