Boomers literally had to rewind the movie for the next person.
>>
>>221006831
I never got this. Why can't the person who rented it next just rewind the tape? Why do I have to do it? Seems like a pretty silly thing to make signs and slogans about
>>
>>221006831
Yeah it was SOUL
>>
>>221006902
It's common courtesy and gentlemanly behaviour. Of course zoomzooms could never understand such things. Pity.
>>
>>221006951
Zoomzooms and browns*
>>
>>221006951
I'm a millennial who grew up watching VHS. So what if the next person has to take 5 minutes to rewind the tape if I forget. Who the fuck cares
>>
>>221006831
Mom and pop stores would charge nearly nothing to rewind movies. Blockbuster made it part of their business model.
>le soul blockbuster!
>never had their own card.
>>
>>221006831
I'm 36 and grew up in the 90s and everyone knew Blockbuster sucked ass. We basically used it to demo games we were considering buying and that's about it. I remember renting Pokemon Snap because it wasn't worth actually buying it since you could beat it in a couple of hours.

Good morning, saar
>>221007002
>Mom and pop stores would charge nearly nothing to rewind movies. Blockbuster made it part of their business model.
Thanks for posting this. Holy fuck, it's incredible how people either misremember or are larping. Blockbuster was incredibly soulless.
>>
>>221006902
want the mystery to go even deeper?

>return a film without rewinding
>clerk notices
>they put it in a special VCR that rewinds at warp speed
>took them 4 seconds of effort right in front of you
>>
Remember when grocery stores had video rentals and arcade cabinets? Thems were the days
>>
>>221007134
>Remember when grocery stores had video rentals
you mean during the mid 2010s?
>>
>>221006990
Like he said, zoomers will never understand.
>>
>>221007151
No I mean they had actual video stores inside the grocery store, with clerks and shelves and everything. I'm not talking about automated Redbox gargage
>>
>>221007002
blockbuster never even checked i got movies that weren't rewound several times
>>
>>221006990
>So what if the next person has to take 5 minutes to rewind the tape if I forget
In white countries (Europe) you paid a fine for not rewinding
>>
>>221006902
High trust society.
>>
>>221006831
The younger millennials and older zoomers also did this. People just forget the age span of the generations involved.

>I always loved the funky little mom and pop places like in The Fisher King.
You mean like Anne's Video Spot? It was a proper VHS rental store as far as I remember.
>>
>>221006902
Imagine having to rewind the tape everytime you wanted to watch a movie.

It took a while too, depends on the machine and era. The rewind time was the perfect post-film moment to talk, have a drink and sit through before moving on to something else.
>>
most 90s VCRs would auto rewind at the end of the tape
>>
>>221006951
Boomers put so much emphasis on courtesy and politeness and then assrape your entire generation economically.
>>
>>221006902
Same thing as the shopping cart.
>>
>>221006902
>can't understand doing something nice for a stranger
You are the problem.
>>
>>221007608
>movie is around 90 minutes
>tape is 120 minutes
>>
I don't remember why but as a kid my grandpa wanted me to use an external tape rewinder instead of the vcr.
>>
>>221007629
That's completely different since leaving your shopping cart out, they can hit cars or block people from parking. Far more discourteous than making someone hit the rewind button and wait 3 minutes before they can start a movie
>>
>>221006831
>REEEEEEE BOOMERS!
Obsessed
>>
>>221007693
big studios don't buy blank tapes at best buy, they only use the amount of strip they need
>>
>>221007709
Rewinding was wear on your VCR. Also it took a fuck ton longer to do than a dedicated rewinder.
>>
>>221006831
In america, here if you didn't do it, the videoclub did, it was no big deal
>>
>>221006951
Zoomers were born without empathy and a sense of humour. It's sad really.
>>
>>221007709
Some decks leave the tape loaded around the drum even while fast rewinding without picture and it theoretically wears the tape and the heads.
>>
>>221006951

True.
>>
>>221006831
my VCR had autorewind, you literally just had to do nothing at all and it happened for you.
>>
>>221008017
Although most external rewinders are very hard on the tape, as they do not ease down the speed when the rewinding is almost complete.
>>
>>221008005
big money over here renting multiple tapes
>>
>>221006902
basically it was the stores attempt to make you do their job for them, like returning shopping carts or putting clothing back on the rack, or returning meat you decided not to buy back into the fridge. they tricked an entire generation into thinking this was "polite" and "considerate" when in reality it was just them squeezing a few more pennies out of the bottom line. well, great, you bought some ceo some nicer glasses for the minibar in his yacht or something, good for you.

fuck that shit. push carts into the next parking lot, fuck them wankers.
>>
>>221008111
hey man, back door sluts 14 isnt gonna rent itself
>>
>>221008322
thank you for your service
>>
>>221006831
yeah back when we had a polite society
>>
>>221008180
Yeah cause they'd pay the wagies more for dping those things

lol I remember my local Blockbuster actually sold DVD rewinders (almost all the way up until they closed...until they started putting tons of candy and snacks at the checkout).
What was with that?

I definitely remember the days of being polite and rewinding a VHS tape before returning it. DVDs usually played from their designated start (trailers or main menu), but I also remember sometimes popping in DVDs and the movie resuming where the previous renter had left it of.

hmmMMMMM?!
>>
>>221006902
This is true.
If you want to watch it, rewind it.
Hypothetically, I could rewind a tape that no one will ever watch again. It's a waste of electricity.
>>
>>221007571
>The rewind time was the perfect post-film moment to talk, have a drink and sit through before moving on to something else.
Those are the credits
>>
>>221007087
you mean like the VCR you watched it on does?
>>
>>221008008
>Zoomers were born without empathy and a sense of humour. It's sad really.
No, they weren't. It's a product of smartphone culture and rampant Me-Me-Me-Neoliberalism that made them like this
>>
>>221009267
lmao, not a hint of irony
>>
>>221008473
Who the fuck would sit through the credits?
>>
>>221010074
Me
You contemplate and discuss the film while listening to the musical score as the credits roll. Unless it's a bad movie in which case you immediately turn it off
>>
>>221006902
you sound like your skin is poop colored, so you wouldn't understand even if i did explain it to you
>>
>>221008473
The most you'd get is the first 20 seconds to get to know the name of an actor (since there is no internet to look it up). No one sits through the whole credits.
>>
>>221011229
It is if you want a post-film moment to talk, have a drink and sit through before moving on to something else.
>>
for me it was taping over part of the movie before returning to claim a refund
>>
>>221007658
The only favor is to blockbuster, and that's after you've given them your custom
we didn't have such rules here, and we also aren't obliged to tip, very curious
>>
>>221011229
It's not about actually watching the credits, it's about listening to the music (ending credits music is usually pretty good) while thinking about or talking about the movie. Also if you were in a movie theater it was nice to wait until everyone else left before you got up so you didn't have to bump elbows with strangers
>>
>>221011263
>>221011363
I get it, I don't mind, but from my experience rewinding the movie was top priority and letting the credits roll a waste of time
>>
I worked at hollywood video and we had those high speed rewinders on deck. Every movie that got returned fed into it. there was no penalty for not rewinding.
That being said, it's like putting the cart back. You're a hard R N word if you dont do it.
>>
>>221007002
>Blockbuster made it part of their business model.
Cringe ass redditor making shit up. kys.
>>
>>221011574
It's nothing like putting the cart back, that's such a stupid comparison. Carts left out in the parking lot can be hit by cars and cause damage, block parking spots and are an all around nuisance. Comparing that to making someone wait a few minutes before they can watch a movie is retarded.
>>
>>221007072
Kid youre the one playing pretend. How come you're really worthless? I can tell everything about your life is dogshit. Your mom did drugs and you never knew your dad I'm guessing.
>>
>>221011603
it's an acceptable comparison. rewinding a tape costs you nothing, not even time really since you can go do something else while it rewinds, even watch tv. not doing it makes you a nigger

>Your friends/family mostly paying attention because no smartphones
>>
>>221011603
You dont earn good money, do you?
>>
>>221011640
if rewinding a tape costs you nothing, then it costs nothing for the next person to rewind their tape that they just rented, or for an employee to put it through a rewinder.
>>
>>221011574
that's fine, how it should be imo
if you're obligated then it's not a nice gesture, it's your duty and you're a cunt if you _don't_ do it
It flips it on its head where niceness vanishes and you're left with nothing but cunts
>>
>>221011505
>You had to use tape
oh no
>>
We used to live in a high trust society
>>
>>221011603
You're fucking stupid.
>Carts left out in the parking lot can be hit by cars and cause damage, block parking spots and are an all around nuisance.
"oh damn, this cart is blockign the spot, I'll have to park in the spot next to it and walk an extra 4 seconds."

vs

"oh damn, the previous person didnt rewind. I'll have to rewind it and sit here for minutes while my popcorn gets cold."
>>
>>221011678
See you're low IQ and lack critical thinking so there's no point trying to explain it to you.
>>
>Completely ignoring the comment about cars hitting carts
I've seen it happen, I've even seen wind push carts into cars during storms and shit. It's legitimately a hazard. Who cares about your cold popcorn faggot
>>
>>221006902
You're such a whiny entitled bitch you would have shit your pants and thrown a tantrum if you had to rewind a tape you had just rented.

My favorite was this place called DrugPlus or something. It was sort of like a huge CVS as I recall. And they basically if not literally had an actual video store. Like you had to walk through a turnstile and everything. Every other place was more like a nook. Although still great.

It made us more curtious to each other, gave a sense of community your racial entitlement never could.
>>
>>221007002
Pretty sure you're thinking of late fees, not rewind fees. Granted I was born in the late 80s so my parents handled the payments, but I certainly do not recall BB having rewind fees.
However, I do remember negative sentiment toward BB when one was built near us, based on the belief that it was driving away the mom and pop rental stores (which it probably did, since I don't think the m&p near me lasted more than a few years after the BB opened)

There are so many common courtesy things we all just took for granted before our governments let infinite brownoids into civilization, huh?
