Larry Sanders and Oz were always pretty niche from memory. The first killer app was probably Sex and the City. That's when I first recall an HBO show becoming a major mainstream hit, quickly followed by Sopranos. Here in Aus it was picked up by a network to broadcast and I remember a big deal being made of the fact that "fuck" was said in the show even though it was only once and at the end.

I never could get into Oz. Just too hardcore for my taste. I would catch an episode every now and then and be reminded I hated violent prison torture kind of shit.
