For me it went ultra downhill with the introduction of PC principal and the episodic story bullshit. Unlike a lot of the real fans, I've always liked that they made fun of current events. But then it was basically "we're gonna make fun of everything becoming wokeshit by turning our own show into shit as well" except in the most unironic way that didn't even have a subtle middle finger towards any of it.

Trey and Matt have been on top long enough to become the Hollywood elitists they used to make fun of. I knew it was over when that first $900 million deal from Paramount happened. The Trump election.
You could go as far as to say as the decline started to really take off after Isaac Hayes died. They were muzzled after the whole Muhammad episode fiasco after already stepping on Paramount's toes with the Scientology one, like it or not. They had been completely neutered.
Them shitting on their own work by saying how they dislike the first seasons of South Park, but it was within there that the show took off, the characters became embraced by the people, and the stories were just as simple as wanting to put dick and fart jokes on television and tying it all together with a sort of hackneyed "You know, I learned something today..." moment ala Jerry Springer's "Final Thought" to tie up and justify all the insanity you just witnessed up with a moral bow, even simply getting catchphrases over. The episodes of the kids getting into wacky hijinks in a quiet and weird mountain town were the best, not the jaded unable to relate to kids anymore episodes focusing around Randy and the tired and repetitive Tegridy Farm joke ran into the fucking ground.
Trump broke their brains, so much so that it fucked up their entire plans for a season, no doubt. For the first time in their lives and in the shows run, reality just became too weird and surreal to parody and they snapped. It was around that time that they had softened up on their relentless trashing of celebrities because they're soooo desperate to break into that social circle. L.A. fucked their heads up so much that the Matt and Trey who once said that at the drop of a hat, they will pack up and move back to Colorado have long since been killed and buried. They now want in and to be a part of the very entertainment machine that they mocked and claimed they hated for decades. I can't deny they're still funny and that the show has increased tenfold in animation quality since the beginning, but its just tiresome now that they have given into the beast.

Trey was the only talented one, anyway.

This was the season they had planned ahead of time to be about Trump losing, Hillary becoming the first President, Bill Clinton and Bill Cosby would deradicalize internet trolls and memberberries would take over the world. They even ended the episode before election night begging people to vote for Hillary. But she lost and they were forced to drop every plot line. The rest of the season was barely dragged across the finish line by Gerald's and the internet trolls' antics that no longer had any remaining ties to the story and they had the Hillary character admit that their plans had gone to shit and had to improvise.
The next season started immediately with the utterly dismissive and out of touch "White People Renovating Houses" that marked the end of South Park's cultural relevance, with the sharpest drop in viewership from ~1.8 million views average to around a million and it never recovered.
Seasons 10-19 still had their moments, even at their worst they were 50% good.
