>>221010641Now that I have some acquaintance with the classics, I can read in another possible significance here. The writers were a bunch of educated nerds who engaged in self-mockery more than once by depicting the nerds in a "writer's room" for the shows-within-the-show. That they know their classics is indicated when one of these writer's room nerds suggests "Cerberus?" for a character name, or similar.Homer is wearing a mock toga, pretending to be a Greek guy, saying that he doesn't want any beans. Pythagoras, another Greek, is believed to have had "favism", a condition that makes it difficult or very disagreeable to eat certain types of beans, particularly fava beans. Pythagoras shunned beans, and one of his strangest teachings is that he seems to have projected his condition outward, advising others to also avoid eating beans and expecting bean-shunning from his disciples. It's a stretch, I admit, but it is not impossible that the writers had this subtle connection in mind with the line. How all this relates to leader beans is an open question.
Season 4 had a bunch of weird, awkward shock humor in it (which this episode has in abundance) as many of the writers were leaving once the production was done and didn't give a shit about doing gags they wouldn't normally do.
