I have always disliked how he intentionally gave Star-Lord's mom cancer under the justification his feelings for her were distracting from his self-appointed mission to assimilate the universe.

If feels more thematically fitting to me if he knew she could get sick from being with him, but kept doing her because, despite claiming to love her, he was too egotist to put her well-being above his own personal gratification. It'd be a fitting breaking point since for all his flaws Star-Lord loves hard and would lay down his life for any of his comrades.
