>the real devil is the white man because he took the natives’ land and tried to cultivate it, so God justifiably punished him by rotting his crops and bewitching his children>the white man’s wife is not to blame because she was forced into his servitude >please also watch the Norseman and Nosferatu and Lighthouse for more truth nukes about why white men are evil and deserve their horrible punishments while women are redeemed and given rewards and pleasures
>>221012037This isn't the right interpretation. It's meant to be viewed more straightforwardly than that>there really is a witch in the woods>the devil really is black phillipNone of it makes sense otherwise. What happens cannot be explained any other way. Reading identity politics into it was clearly not intended
>>221012037It's more about religious oppression and gender norms than anything else.
>>221012037Everything is woke if you just completely make shit up about the movie.
so OP is really trying to push this psyop where films like the VVitch and Norseman are some kind of coherent "genre". This isn't the first such post of his I've seen. He likely has not even watched these movies, as evidenced by this retarded post where he totally mischaracterized the film, but also the fact that he has repeatedly referred to the Norseman as a horror film, for no discernible reason.
This is like the 20th thread OP has made complaining about this movie
>>221012037>given rewards and pleasuresthe devil offers the taste of butter and a dress, and she gets neitherjust say you didn't watch the movie
>>221012630They mention the rotten corn early, so I went immediately to ergot poisoning and hallucinations. But literally witches and the devil works too. I don't remember the details, but at some point I thought hallucinations would be a weak explanation, I think when the other witches turn up.
>>221012630>>221012989I never liked the ergot poisoning hallucinations explanations. The movie presents itself as "A New England Folk Tale" and I think we should take it as just that. This is the kind of story these people would tell, and they took those stories at face value, at least as far as the actual existence of witches and the devil. The movie wants us to be in that mindset, it wants us to be a 17th century New Englander that absolutely takes for granted that witches live in the woods and the devil tempts young girls, and frankly the movie is a whole lot more fun in that mindset.
>>221013154I agree, it works better. I tried to go into Northman with that perspective and it worked out quite well.
>>221012037*ahem* akshually there was supposed to be an epic fight between traditional good vs evil at the end, but the goat refused to act out his lines and the young actor who played the dad was too bucked to do his bit as well.filmmaking is full of happy little accidents and workarounds like that I'm sure (not a kinographer myself). This changes nothing for what happens after that but I just wanted to bring it up, heh ;)
>>221012037We can guess that the witch in the woods is someone that went through the same thing thomasin did where we're witnessing a complete cycle of the puritans giving young women to black phillip by exiling them to create more witches and then blaming those same witches they created while fearing black phillip. The story is one of civilization creating its own problems through fear and hatred, nature and semi natural forces then taking advantage of that fear and hatred to get back at civilization. purely based on themes, they basically remade Naruto.
The real devil was BLACK PhilipThis movie is racist!
