It's not like Leo ran to a Klan meeting covered in the girl's blood saying 'that evil nigger did it, I was cradling her poor body in my arms while she bled out'. (The klan's major revival was still two years away anyway). It was the rich yankee lobbyists influencing the judicial that really pissed everyone off. He was sentenced to hang, so he got hanged. It just had to be private citizens carrying out the sentence instead of the corrupt judiciary.
