Even at the time, I felt it would have been a helluva lot better to have Anakin freeze in horror, then have the clones come in and pew-pew all the kids while he stands there in anguish with his eyes closed. Or... anything, other than turn into a child-murdering monster at the drop of a hat. Rang hollow.
