What is it that makes Brian De Palma’s films so soulful but Quentin Tarantino’s films so soulless when they both essentially make the same kind of high brow, pastiche schlock?
DePalma is at least honest unlike QT
The only Brian De Palma film ive seen is Carlito's Way which was as close to a 10/10 as it getsRec me some of his filmography
>>221022230Body Double is my favorite but Blow Out is also great.
>>221022074DePalma chose to emulate Hitchcock and put his own spin on the style that is instantly recognizable. QT rips off so many things at once that his films really dont have an identity of their own. Also DePalma actually made earnest, weird, genuinely sleazy trash like Sisters and Body Double while QT made stuff more digestable for normies and critics. Safe sleazy, if you will.
>>221022230Phantom of the Paradise redeemed musicals in my eyes and is as solid of a movie as it can get.

>>221022074Brian De Palmas generation was inspired by pre 1970 film when a lot of concepts and techniques were still being innovated, but they didn't have easy access to everything. They we're essentially remix directors but because they had the novelty of the hays code being abolished and limited options for viewing old films they felt original. Meanwhile Tarantino grew up in the home video era, so he could watch like almost everything whenever he wanted and essentially became a remix director of the remix directors. His films feel less soulful because hes basically a big budget cinematic equivalent of Family Guy or Robot Chicken.
