How do you rank the great American Auteurs of Golden Age Hollywood?
Ford > Hawks > Welles > RayOutput is important, that gives Ford and Hawks the edge over Welles for me. Ray is a distant fourth and honestly has no business being involved in the conversation.
>>221022327Imo Ray mogs Welles in category except Cinematography.
>>221022444Greatly prefer John Huston myself
>>221022562Not an Auteur
>>221022279Where’s Hitchcock Where’s Billy Wilder Where’s Frank CapraWhere’s Lubitsch
>>221022806Hitchcock is BritishBilly Wilder is AustrianFrank Capra is ItalianLubitsch is German(You) is Retarded
>>221022279I don't. Couldn't care less about them.
>>221022327This, Ford and Hawks are equals. Hawks may edge over due to genre diversity. Welles is frankly overrated, Ray has a few good movies but not enough to consider him a great.>>221023695That's because you're a retard.
>>221022279How much of Citizen Kane was done by Toland and Mank?
>>221023774>That's because you're a retard. It is because I have taste and remain unimpressed by le canonical directors.
>>221022279Welles is the only one I can name, so he mogs all
>>221022717>french word for authorAm I missing something here, why doesn't he count?
>>221024682You hold the normie opinion though. Only the individual with the true passion for cinema will search out the old masters. The average "cinephile" A24 Zillenial has never heard of them except Welles but only because of the Citizen Kane meme.
>>221026555"An auteur (French for "author") is a creative artist, usually a film director, who exercises a high level of creative control across all aspects of a film. Their vision and signature style are so distinctive that they are considered the primary "author" of the work."John Huston was basically a "director for hire". I'm not denying he made great films but that just because the studios kept giving him big projects he didn't have a unique flair like the others did.
>>221023774Ford has genre diversity, it's almost as good as Hughes. Welles is only "overrated" because two thirds of his films were ruined by studios, his unmeddled projects (Kane, Trial, Othello, Touch of Evil) are all great, but he's still the weakest of the four imo.
>>221026654Interesting, I was a simpleton until today and didn't know it carried more weight than that. Only seen 2 of his anyways, so can't really comment then.
>>221022279Ford #1, no doubt
>>221023774Back to redit faggot. Welles mogs them all.
>>221022279I haven't seen enough of their work to rank them properly, but of the combined 7 or 8 films I've seen from the 4 of them Johnny Guitar is my favorite by a mile.
