What made it so good? Why were the other Brosnan 007 movies so bad?
Tomorrow Never Dies is pretty underrated
>>221038620I think Tomorrow Never Dies was pretty good too.
>>221038620it had 6 years to cook. people will say it's a dalton movie but it doesn't have the weird issues dalton movies usually did, and dalton aged so quickly i could never imagine him coming back.also best bond burger haircut, pierce is also just doing a more quiet performance that fits
>>221038620hot villainess henchwoman, hot scientist assistant, classic russian villains. plus the n64 video game was popular at the time
>>221038620Halle Berry ruined Die Another Day.
Martin Campbell
>>221038620it was intended to be the 3rd Dalton film. it was written with him in mind. it got stuck in development hell. the script had nearly 10 years to get tightened up. it was a total softball. a literal downie could have knocked goldeneye out of the park. not saying Broz didnn't do a good job, but i'm just saying ANYONE could have knocked that movie out of the park after 10 years of re-writes and hype.
I think it had been the longest hiatus between Bond movies in history, and it just boldly landed in the mid 90's with computers/updated and plausable gadgets and a great story/cast. Simple as. And it had a great video game made about it soon after.
>>221038620austin powers destroyed the franchise.
>>221038690tbf I think the writers ruined it for her, its not that bad though i think its better than The World Is Not Enough
>>221038641This
>>221038786I'll go as far as to say Tomorrow Never Dies has a better villain than Goldeneye
>>221038836I think most of Brosnan villians are a bit underated, even in The World Is Not Enough which i condisder the worst Robert Carlyle does a good job given the material, poor old Sophie Marceau though is pretty awful in it
>>221038620It was good because it was a script originally meant for Dalton, and written before Barbara Broccoli took over, although that didn't stop her from changing M to a woman and adding a bunch of feminist garbage to the script.
>>221038620it's not good you just liked the video game when you were 7
>>221038786it'sssss okaaaay, but god did Bronson Bond took a nose dive after this.
>>221039027>it'sssss okaaaayAre you a snake?
>>221038620This and Daltons two Bonds are the best three film run of the series
>>221038786lmao i like that he does racist mocking kung fu moves makes him more human and relatable
>>221038982Goldeneye is actually anti-woke. Bond gets chastised at the beginning for being old-fashioned and sexist. Yet, he saves the world by doing what Bond always does: killing bad guys and sleeping with hot women. Thus, M is totally proven wrong.
>>221038620Solid actors and a great video game. Pretty decent original score. Sean Bean being an ex MI6 agent made it kino.
>>221038620Every time they got a new Bond it starts of good, but by the end of his run the movies devolve into a parody of themselves. Except for OHMSS and the Dalton movies because they weren't able to make enough of them. So Connery's movies start good, then turn into a parody, Moore's movies start good, then turn into a parody, Brosnan's movies start good and then turn into a parody, even Craig's movies start good then turn into a parody.
I think having peak Famke Janssen playing a sex mad killer was a genuis bit of writing/casting. Also Robbie Coltrane was amazing, i mean having Minnie Driver just do a bit part was so fucking cool as some bimbo singer. Theres so much to love about Goldeneye. Judy Dench calling Bond a misogynistic dinosaur and playing M only to crow "come back", you just loved it it made some changes but kept to the formula. Top 5 bond for me.
>>221038620Bond movies are ultimately defined by 1. Villains2. Women3. Chase scene (always a chase scene in a Bond flick)4. ScoreGoldeneye was solid to great in all categories; it had several chase scenes, if I remember right.
https://www.youtube.com/@ScamboliReviewsScamboli's anime reviews are genuinely some of the funniest shit I've ever listened to.
>>221039159Wrong thread sorry
>>221038786Fun fact, Elliot Carver was based on Robert Maxwell (Ghislaine Maxwell's father) who was a newspaper owner.
Slightly self aware, Bond shags his assessor at the start, Moneypenny mentions sexual harassment in the workplace, M calls Bond a dinosaur, but then you have Famke playing a killer who orgasms when she kills called Onatopp. Sean Bean is a great villain. Great and memorable set pieces like the tank. Cute Bond girl. For England, James?Tomorrow Never Dies, Michelle Yeoh was a bit flat, plot had its moments. World is Not Enough is very flat but I still don't mind it, some stuff is too silly and the villain guy is boring. Die Another Day is too over the top but not in a campy fun way.

>>221038641>>221038645Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies are a perfect blend of classic Bond shenanigans with the comedy and gadgets, with the modern gritty action "realism." For example Carver is using a state-of-the-art stealth sub and media manipulation to start a war between two nations which is a serious and believable threat, but it also still ends up being a giant ridiculous lair with a bunch of henchmen to dying and doing flips while explosions go off in the background. Both perfect Bond films. That said The World Is Not Enough has the best theme. I also think Bond fixing his tie underwater is one of the funniest gags in Brosnan's films.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBrz-5ai1mo
>>221039075Also despite M having that initial hostility to Bond, through the rest of Goldeneye, and even moreso in the rest of Brosnan's run M clearly has a great respect for Bond and his abilities. Honestly making M more of a nurturing but stern mother-type who acknowledges that Bond is naturally very good, but would be better if he just took things more seriously works for Bond. I also think that's how we ended up with Mallory Archer which is worth it just for that.
Goldeneye is so fucking kino. Holy shit, bros… It’s the total package when it comes to Bond movies. The N64 game was just the cherry on-top. Supremely fucking kino!
>>221038620Has that cold war "Pesky Soviets Up To No Good" vibe.
Actor and director that respect the work and the audience.
>>221040579>through the rest of Goldeneye, and even moreso in the rest of Brosnan's run M clearly has a great respect for Bond and his abilitiesM's only appearance in Goldeneye is the initial briefing scene. She doesn't appear again until TND.
>>221038620>Why were the other Brosnan 007 movies so bad?Go Fuck Yourself!TWINE!Pros!> Electra is the 2nd best seductress of the series... possibly the best.> Solid male villain in Renard.> Fantastic pre opening credits sequence & boat chase.> Good ski chase.> More use of the fun Russian gangster.> Brosnan being awesome as usual.> Good sub plot with & use of M.> Great score.> One of my top favorite opening songs of the franchise.> Richards looks damn good.> Torture chair was a fantastic sequence.Cons!> Richards is a weak actress, I personally think she is not as horrid as people say, but she is poor especially when she is meant to be playing a nuclear scientist.> Renard is underused.>>221038880>poor old Sophie Marceau though is pretty awful in itAre you fucking insane?
>>221039246and a Mossad colonel>>221038620I think they're pretty good, unlike most of the Moore era
>>221041220Weird, I could have sworn she was in more of it. I just watched all of Brosnan's films together a little while ago, so I must have conflated all her scenes together.
>>221041568>Richards is a weak actressI think Richards' main issue is that her voice is very monotone, no matter the context she always has the same intonation and cadence, she just gets louder when the scene is supposed to be intense.
>>221038620it was the only one based on a video game
>>221038620Goldeneye was partially written during the Dalton-era, so it had a bit more of that old grit left in it which then carried over into Tomorrow Never Dies (which is when things very obviously started getting a little goofy). It was also the first Bond movie set in the post-Soviet era and it needed to really change things up.
>>221041568TWINE is real mixed bag for me. My biggest problem is that Michael Apted is bad at directing action scenes. The intro at the bank in Spain is the prime example. Bond doing espionage at a bank has great potential, but all of it is wasted because Apted decided to shoot the entire thing in one ordinary looking office. It's shot so blandly and over in like one minute, which is why they had to move the credits until after the big boat chase. Sophie Marceau is great, but Robert Carlyle is completely wasted. I watched TWINE recently and, while I was watching, I forgot he was in it. I also think the movie does a really poor job explaining the whole Elektra kidnapping plot point. I was confused about when exactly Elektra got kidnapped. Because Bond is retrieving the ransom money in the opening, but then afterwards, everyone talks about it as if it happened some time ago.
>>221041920There was a lot of bad writing in TWINE, it's not a complicated movie or plot obviously but it was done bad enough in places where something doesn't make much sense. The kidnapping of Elektra was also not really well explained or expanded upon either and Robert Carlyle seemed to be more like a henchman than the mastermind of it all.
>>221040634based based based
>>221038620the n64 game was absolutely massive
>>221043328Aged pretty badly though. The superior game even at the time was Perfect Dark, since it was Goldeneye but better in every way.
>>221041655Yeah, I've made the same mistake in the past. Given how the plot plays out there's never really a moment for him to be in touch with MI6 after the beginning.
>>221038620>What made it so good?Sean Bean
>>221043343I like PD but it loses steam fast after the first act of the game
>>221038620Purvis and Wade got more control
>>221038690I still maintain that Die Another Day is an acceptable movie as long as Halle Berry isn't on screen. It plummets as soon as she does.also the Madonna song sucks
>>221044912The song works better when you realise the title sequence is Bond being interrogated in Korean prison, implying they're using the music as a form of torture
>>221038880Awful opinions, never communicate with anyone ever again. Die Another Day is not only the worst Brosnan Bond film, it may be the worst of all of them (pre-Craig era, which doesn't count)
>>221044970I chuckled, anon.
>>221038620Martin Campbell, he made the two best bond movies, both of which were the start of a new bond. They should bring him back for the next film.
>>221044570Yeah, I lose interest when the last levels on the space ship and the alien planet happen. Way too linear and lacking objectives.>>221044912It had too much over the top retarded shit like an invisible Aston Martin and a giant space laser (which was part of the plot for 1999s Austin Powers, so the parody became the inspiration somehow).
>>221038679The N64 game came out 2 years later retardThe only reason it's good is Martin Campbell. Casino Royale was also 10/10. I wish he would do a 3rd one but he's like 90 years old now
>>221045403He's still producing movies though, he's got a new one coming out soon. He's also only 82.
>>221038732Dalton bond movies suck
>>221039014Contrarian
>>221039130You also need Bond's particular brand of masculinity and charisma
>>221045824
>>221041568This scene gave me a serious fetish for chicks in pantyhose choking me to near death.
>>221038620>What made it so good?pretty much the video game
I think it was because of the inexperience of the director who had only done television at that point. Some scenes really actually do look like they were made for TV and framed and edited that way, but it worked to its benefit in a roundabout way seeing as how this was the new James Bond and that TV style closeups of his face really sold it.
>>221045850Unironically same, the way she dressed in that movie was an awakening.
>>221045847cope, contrarian
>>221045870You're the contrarian since the majority of people agree they're some of the best movies, dummy.
The movies the videogames all were still made with love. The opposite of today's perfunctory AI slop
>>221045860My nigga
Will the game ever get a remaster and modern iteration? I miss it and the studio that gave us Timesplitters 2.
>>221045891That first game anyway, then for some retarded reason (lower costs) the rights got taken away from Rare and given to fucking EA for the next games.>>221045903It had a modern remake about 10 years ago and it wasn't very good.
>>221038690Why? Was she responsible for the writing, the shitty CGI, and the Madonna song?
>>221045948She's completely retarded and it's really obvious. Perhaps the worst actress of her generation.
>>221045959I guess her "read this, bitch" line didn't help either lol
>>221038641TND is grossly underrated.
>>221046182i see what you did there
>>221045948the madonna song was based
>>221043343>>221044570You are both wrong
Goldeneye is OK. The tank scene is the standout. The rest is pretty standard, and I enjoyed the game way more. I like all the bullshit Die Another Day. TND is OK.
>>221046310I miss games that were optimized for fun.
>>221045358>It had too much over the top retarded shit like an invisible Aston MartinFuck you, the spy car duel was awesome.
>>221039130Don't forget the really cool sets and filming locations.
>>221039130>he doesn't include the most important feature of any Bond movie: the setsyou had one job
>>221038620The 1990-2005 was devoid of kino. They were too caught up in being edgy, and "Xtreme". It made everything cringe.
>>221045883Lmao maybe in your small bubble. It's either Brosnan movies or Connery movies, thrid one is Moore.
>>221046541>I miss games that were optimized for fun.yep
>there will never be another prime Famke Janssen
>>221046980I would say 1995 is when that got unbearable but you're not wrong
>>221039246He was also friends with drumpf
>>221038620Good action Good charactersGood settingsGOAT final fightThe only Brosman movie that comes close is the one with evil steve jobs but that only cause its carried by the legendary Jonathan Pryce as the villain
>>221045860Nothing can top Onatopp
>>221038620Good action Good musicGood characters Good dialogue A very great director directing it>>221038641Fpbp. It's Brosnan's 2nd best and Carver is a very relevant villain
When he drives the tank through the mock Moscow they built is pretty kino. That they built that whole set is impressive in itself.
>>221038620GoldenEye was originally Dalton's third Bond.
>>221039014its literally the only good bond film
>>221038620it's not very good though. besides the feminist girlbossery in the beginning, bond acts like a total sociopath in the move and guns down random, innocent russian soldiers with wild abandon. he also dehumanizes germans and rightwingers, cossacks and gives his approval for bolsheviks killing them and their families.
>>221046310ts is far worse than eye/pd.
>>221045358those are only like 2 levels.
>>221038641Tomorrow Never Dies is my favorite Bond movie out of all Bond movies, not just the Brosnan ones.Golden Eye is decent. Rest of the Brosnan ones are not very good, but still more entertaining than most movies today.
>>221050805tnd has a lot of good parts but the gook spy drags it down a lot
Why are evil bond girls so kino?
>>221050889Thats Die another Day with the gook spy that changes his face to be white
>>221050942isn't that most of them?>cucks their bf, husbandalmost every time.
>>221045824Never watched them, so idk. He was the best part of Hot Fuzz though.
>>221050768These soldiers would instantly kill Bind though. He has no choice
>>221045824Nuh uh
>>221052179sure, but every other bond, until then, had refrained from mass murdering random people. he clearly enjoyed doing it too.
It has such great locationsGoldeneye is one of my favourites but the other Brosnan movies are my least favourites; at least TWINE gave a good game too >>12620205
>>221038641That movie sucks ass, worst Bond girls and a back door pilot to try to establish Michelle Yeoh as an action star. Fucking trash.
>>221045850>>221045860Not into being choked, but any straight man at least get a semi chub when she wraps her legs around Bond in the chair. Elektra is so unbelievably hot.
>>221052813>back door pilot to try to establish Michelle Yeoh as an action starShould I tell him?
>>221049782>straight up>with a twist
>>221038620It was perfectly over the top for a 90’s 007 kino without jumping the shark. As the late great Tony Scott once said, people want to go the theater and come out and say “wow that was fun” and that’s what goldeneye did.
>>221045824Kino*Ftfy
>>221038620Bond as a series started sucking with Goldeneye. That's where i stopped watching it.It disappeared up its own arse with all its self-seriousness, and the political correctness of the 90s didn't do it any favours.
>>221043343They both aged like garbage. They run at like 12 Frames per second unless you're staring at a wall point blank.
>>221046310Timesplitters 1 is god-awful. But 2 and 3 are excellent.
>>221054258Play it on a CRT TV, preferably with an actual n64. You’ll enjoy it
>>221049782Xenia and Chyna ruined my life, I was into femdoms from age 9
>>221038620Watched it twice today. Once normal and then with the commentary track
>>221054258>staring at a wall point blank.
>>221045824License to Kill should have been a spin-off with Felix Leiter in the main role rather than the fridge Bond responds to.
