Then they did blow up a courthouse which seemed to include somewhat impressive in-camera shots. 30-40 million for marketing, that leaves 50-60 million to make the movie itself.
I didn't care at all about the Batman connection, I just didn't like it because it felt like it's only motivation was to humiliate the character of Arthur even further because the wrong people liked him too much. That first movie is pretty even-handed in the way that it extends a lot of sympathy towards Arthur for being a fucked up loser through circumstances out of his control as much as through his own misdeeds and lack of self-control, but it deliberately does not villify him as hard as the second movie does. There's even an entire subplot about the system failing him when his psychiatrist refuses to listen to him or help him in any significant way before outright saying "We're losing funding, you're on your own", there's a major theme in that movie of systematic societal failures being as responsible for Arthur turning out the way he did as Arthur's own obvious mental issues are; Then we get to the second movie and all of a sudden it's claiming that he alone was the cause of his issues, that he just wanted to hurt people because he's broken and it's no one else's issue, even going as far as to make his desire to be seen by Harley as another failing of his.It's a bunch of "pick yourself up by your bootstraps" bullshit that's impossible to be read as anything but Todd Phillips backtracking hard from his points in the first movie because he wants to own the chuds and have their hero get assfucked on camera to really stick it to them
