I thought it was homage to a short story by Isaac Asimov where aliens came to Earth, but they looked like literal red devils, and the fact that they looked so evil made all the smart people conclude that they must NOT be evil because it would be too big of a coincidence, and then it turned out they actually WERE pure evil and they used the credulity of the intelligentsia to take over the planet and enslave everybody.
