How did this character even get greenlit
I don't understand the thing where she blew up the enemy ship. Could all the ships do that the whole time? Luke's X-wing has a hyperdrive and a robot that can navigate. Could he have just hit warp speed through the Death Star? Why didn't anyone else ever mention that you could do that? Wouldn't you immediately build a missile that is basically a hyperdrive with a dildo on the front and shoot it through your enemy's reactor?

>>221057402Objects in realspace cast a shadow in hyperspace that will destroy your ship if you fly through it, which is something Han Solo explains in the very first Star Wars movie.
Because girls get it done, chud.
>>221057097Yes. Relativistic bombs are confirmed real. The Death Star and Star Killers are utterly obsolete. Program a druid to fly a shuttle at hyperspeed into your target and win every fight ever.
>>221057245Self inserts can be good if the person writing isn't a snarky cunt, and are able to actually project their own flaws onto their self-insert. in sci-fi and space settings there is an unwritten rule to not use FTL as a weapon because then you can't really tell a story about anything else but that.
>>221057432Yes, but how does that damage the other ship?
>>221056995>I thought when I read the script that Holdo would be wearing a uniform, so I did some uniform designs and showed them to Rian and he said, “Oh no, no, no, no. She’s flirting with Oscar Isaacs’ character, I don’t want her to be in a uniform, I want her to be unique and almost balletic.” He said, “I’d like to see her body and her body language, and her silhouette, and have her be more feminine.” So I started thinking about feminine balletic design, and something kind of Greek, which made me start thinking about jersey, and then I started thinking about Madame Gres. So that’s where that came from.
>>221060566Oh, and bonus content
>>221057156
>>221057965I've heard that apparently in an earlier version of the script there WAS a mole aboard the ship, which would completely justify the Poe/Holdo tension. Then they eventually got rid of the mole angle... and then didn't alter any of the Poe/Holdo scenes to rectify this.
>>221058788Because she unnecessarily treats the hero (not just a random soldier who did a random good thing, but the Captain of their fleet that personally destroyed the latest Death Star) of the first movie like shit, while also letting numerous other Resistance ships die all around her while under her command due to her inaction, but the movie portrays her as the one being in the right... For reasons.
>>221060252>Was she that much better in Jurassic Park?Yes, she was. The preachiest she got in Jurassic Park was "You know, John, maybe making all these dinosaurs wasn't the best idea" which is, y'know, the entire point of the movie. And she doesn't, say, demote and belittle Grant for going out and rescuing the children.
>>221061944The entire mole thing is idiotic because they have FINN who is an ex stormtrooper right there in front of everyone so he'd be the first that gets investigated thoroughly yet nobody questions him like he's 100% solid nbd. Meanwhile Poe is treated like some suspicious entity for no apparent reason. They even have Finn go on a side mission and nobody really questions that either.
>>221058788She was incompetent, annoying, and supposed to have been vindicated by a complete asspul that shouldn't even exist. Really gets the noggin joggin to figure out why people might dislike her. But sure, just write it off as us hating her because she has a vagina.
>>221057298Didn't she cut through several ships, were all of their shields were vibrating
>>221058788Terribly written character, the "they hate her coz she looks like an she" was the studio trying to get ahead of the criticisms
>>221058788>general the first order are killing us what do we do>nothing>general please people are dying what do we do>nothing>GENERAL PLEASE>ok uh evacuate i guess? lol?>if we evacuate they will blow up all our ships, we will be sitting ducks, we need to mutiny and do something else>erm you dumb chud you didnt realize this was all part of my amazing plan of "doing nothing while people die then evacuate to a planet where we do nothing and continue to die and the resistance would've been crushed if not for luke doing a dumb asspull i had no way of ever knowing about" now watch me suicide bomb myself (which is hecking cool and based) but the darkie cant suicide bomb himself because he is a heckin malerino chuddyThis is like 70% of the movie btw
Honestly, if Holdo had just been revealed to be a villain, or at least portrayed as a severely incompetent dipshit (imagine a scene where she realizes she's way in over her head and starts acting openly cowardly, trying to escape via an escape pod and leaving the crew to deal with the First Order themselves, etc), I think we'd all like the character. She'd be a good Tarkin-level antagonist. But the movie INSISTS that she's in the right (and ultimately reveals that she was) and INSISTS that Poe is a childish ass for not immediately kowtowing to her vastly superior strategic skills (even though said superior strategic skills get roughly two thirds of the Resistance killed). That's why people hate her.
>>221058888It is like Ukrainian war.A Quadrocopter drones are known for 20+ years. But using them to stop armored assault first time happened in 2022, and it was very effective. So we can expect more relativistic weapons in SW universe soon, thanks to Holdo.

>>221057298Couldn’t just explained it by saying “ the ship was a prototype with a newer version of the Hyper space engine that was decommissioned because too dangerous due to risking to ramming it into something and cause a mass destruction incident”?!It would’ve been a better explanation without breaking the lore of the setting, and even giving Holdo a cool moment where she turned a structural defect into a suicide weapon instead of “lol she actually rolled the super duper 100 nat dice and this allowed her to destroy the whole fleet because Force female and shit!”
>>221062751No because then the "why don't they strap similar prototype engines to asteroids and ram planets at lightspeed" question remains
>>221061999I mean, canonically there are changelings people that can shapeshift. It is canon since Ep2.Its weird they didn’t turn the whole holdo/poe subplot into “the thing but we are chased by the empire”. It would’ve been a cool subplot
>>221062775Just have the ship being a failed prototype and the republic (rebels) being in such a shit position after the First order (nu-empire) took over that they were forced to use the spare ships left, one of which was the modern prototype with a risky and suicide-possible engine.
>>221062816Anon, if that were possible the tech would be mass produced and turned into droid-piloted anti-capital ship missiles
>>221056995Literally me for abrasive middle aged women like the ones that control star wars
>"The Holdo Maneuver has such a low chance of success! It's really a one-in-a-million shot!"So? Put a droid in the pilot's seat. Make it a new droid so they haven't had a chance to gain a personality yet, thus avoiding any potential "I don't want to die" conundrums. Actually, hell, maybe having a personality would actually help them decide to do it, since then they can see it as sacrificing themselves for their friends/the greater good (K-2SO, 3PO in Rise of Skywalker).>"Sir, the possibility of successfully navigating an asteroid field is approximately 3,720 to 1!"You're telling me a droid couldn't do the math to make the Holdo Maneuver work at least somewhat consistently?
George left.
>>221057097You vastly overrate how much the people involved in theses movies care. They think they're just making slop they goycattle will buy no matter what so putting in effort is embarrassing
>>221061999Its not, it fixes other problems in the script. Like why they don't just take all three ships in different direction as soon as they found out they were being tracked, and gives them a reason to go on some secret spy mission. Also if there is suspicion on Finn, then it gives his friends a chance to stick up for him. Maybe holdo and leia treat Poe like shit too because its a perfect cover for why he would get mad and take off. And then you could still do a subversion, maybe kylo had backdoored into Leia's mind and had been scanning her for information. Just seems like a simple fix that makes the second act of the movie less stupid.

Women empathetically self insert. That means that they deeply relate to a character based on certain superficial characteristics, and then inhabit that character emotionally. That’s why women care more about characters being the same race as them, or being customizable in vidya, or whatever. It’s how they prefer to enjoy stories in many cases. Therefore, good things that happen to female characters are more directly felt by women audiences. They are inhabiting the character directly on an emotional level, so if the character is rich, or pretty, or powerful, that is direct appeal.Men logically relate to characters. They relate to characters based on the degree, to which they agree with them, the degree to which they are similarly motivated to them, and the degree to which they find them interesting or entertaining. However, they don’t inhabit the character most of the time. Since the connection is logical and not empathetic, they tend to view the story from the protagonists perspective, but things that happen to the protagonist are still generally perceived as happening to a different individual. In action series, the main character is usually powerful and skilled and handsome. James Bond, for instance. In a romance series directed towards otaku, however, the appeal would be substantially harmed if audiences saw the main character as superior to them. By having meek, middlingly attractive, main characters that the audience feels superior to, even though they receive female attention, it gives the impression that the otaku could as well, seeing as he is superior. A male otaku that views a more handsome, more rich man get a girl in an anime feels jealousy, not victory.

>>221066236This reminds me of this study that was done with children and how they play with toys that I read about a while back. Boys play as their toys whereas girls play as themselves. Meaning, if you give a boy a toy of a previously established character, like Batman, then the boy will start "playing Batman," saving the city, fighting the Joker, etc. You give a girl a toy of Batman and suddenly Batman is hanging out with his friends, going shopping, having tea parties, etc. Boys make themselves the character, girls make the character themselves. There were exceptions on each side, of course, but this was pretty consistent overall.

Episode VII wasn't fantastic, but it set up a story (albeit essentially a retread). The fact that episode VIII was able to essentially undo everything that was established in that first film was fucking stupid especially because then there was an expectation to finish off the trilogy somehow. Holdo was a stupid fucking character with dumb motives that were clearly set up so there could be a twist "gotcha", but her character was just one awful decision in a string of awful decisions.
