It was not a Klansman's wife betraying the group, it was informants sent to get intel. There was no investigator who went around man handling Klansmen, either. The Klan in real life was always far below the federal government in power level. They knew they were badly overmatched and warned their followers not to fall for obvious attempts by the federal government to bait them into fights where they would be crushed by white federal enforcers.
