You needed those slow early episodes to sort of build that up, and escalate things. The show runners were also smart and they played pretty loose with things early because they wanted to see what was working before committing too strongly to any one tone.

The actors had a chance to settle into the roles, and to pitch ideas to the writers or show runners, and they were all on set long enough that there was a real back and forth there. Much rarer to see that in the 'miniseries every few years' style we have on streaming. Focus groups and algorithms have more influence than the actors almost every time.

i'm still finishing season 3 but i like how this show so far doesn't dodge the entire plothole with wormholes/warp drives that they're better as a weapon than transport, if you can just teleport in bombs or chunks of the sun why even bother with massive fleets and shit. it never made sense why warp was just for ships in star treksame with BSG, just jump in nukes. the entire premise of having to take the "defense network" offline is nonsensical unless it magically prevented jumps, you just jump nukes in and you win
