I think that the fame got to him in part, but I think that the biggest thing that screwed with him was Richard Pryor dying claiming that Dave was “the next him” which I could see being a mind fuck where a legitimate legend and trail blazer connected with you like that when you felt your humor never reached his. Which isn’t fair, I’d say prime Dave was as funny as prime Pryor, but Dave was never as emotionally resonant as Pryor, he always felt more irreverent like early Carlin and his career has in some ways mirrored Carlins where he’s now mostly just a preacher of the message more so than a comic. He still respects the jokes he has to tell but he’s absolutely let the last two decades of being considered a legend go to his head and I think his material has suffered for it
