Community was very average until they started to lean into being less grounded. Objectively the chicken mafia episode is the first good episode and the peak of the show is in third season while the second one is the best overall season.

Season 1 was pretty good but has a lot of “average sitcom” in it still. The characters are flexible still and can have deviations from their baseline. Between that and the entire season never leaving the school campus, it felt like the goal was to more akin to a show like How I Met Your Mother or Friends. Probably because I was in community college when this season came out, it’s my favourite for nostalgia reasons. Season 2 is when it locked in the Community identity. Everything from the point they fired Harmon onward has some bits that are good but overall didn’t really feel like they had the vibe right.

I just like the vibes of it, it's not that deep. season 2 is also great, season 3 is mostly great but starts to lose me by the end. the general Chang stuff or whatever was just lame and it just slides from there on out. there are still some really good episodes scattered throughout, but it never really lives up to the heights of seasons 1-2 for me. and again this was my opinion before I was aware of any online discourse about the show. I watched it with friends back in the day and that's how I felt. I can see how it might be remembered more for the later goofier stuff, it definitely is more unique. it's just not my cup of tea.

Afterwards it just feels like it was spinning it's wheels until it collapsed in on itself.Jeff not being the main character anymore and becoming more of an ensemble was the worst decision, Troy and Abed and Annie were only stomachable as wacky side characters who would get featured one episode then would disappear the next. The less said about how they ruined Pierce and Britta the better
