What did and do Australians think about this movie?

Don’t care for it, don’t care for Steve Irwin either. It has always felt like a superficial culture which is imposed onto me. Everything about our “cultural” exports if fake. Just a song and dance for foreigners to nod and say “yep that’s Australia”. We’re an economic zone, not a nation

I liked the more action-oriented sequel more. It had a real finale.

>Oh cool a new 4k release of the original

I'm so fucking tired of Americans man

>It has always felt like a superficial culture which is imposed onto me.
Because it is. It was a culture at a time and boomers don't want to let it go, so it's like having to watch modern shows and movies with 1950s slang or some shit. Anything made here also has to constantly remind you that it's Australian and it's grating, it's hard to think of a better example than the horrific Australian version of The Office.
>there's a crow in our office and we named him Russel Crowe!
I'm so glad it got shitcanned after a single season.
>>
>>221134850
The new version released in Australia, remastered, removes the scene where they make fun of a tranny. Thank Dawkins they are erasing transphobia from classic films

Nobody under the age of 40 knows who he is honestly. I'm in my mid 30s and found out about him because of the one famous movie he did in the 80s, and even then I only saw that movie because of my parents liking it.

Pic related. Never watched it coz it looked shit.
It seemed like it was specifically aimed at an american audience who knew nothing about australia, it was completely shallow and stupid.

Same. The guy was an idiot.

NTA but what is with this copout response you cunts keep using.
I'm a 45 year old white dude.
I grew up with Tim Hiddins (The son of Bush Tucker Man, Les). I lived in the same suburb as they did in the 80s/90s.
Bush Tucker Man was a real aussie legend, not that wanker Irwin.
His techniques for survival are literally still taught to soldiers all over the world. And his show is still a really great watch. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7HSPnTFVAuFQkVzs3KzXjGXO78x-0HNE

I don't mind Steve Irwin but he's extremely overrated and making him into some kind of icon is really strange to me. It's like picking some random TV reality star and making them an international icon of the whole country.

Imagine if the US decided Tiger King was going to be their big icon for the world to think about. It would actually be really funny obviously, but really stupid and weird.

>>221135516
It holds us back from every getting to make any good media either, everything has to feature the big fuck off desert nobody lives in or have constant Australia specific slang in every sentence of dialogue, all just to remind everyone "this is in Australia."

How come Australia has the same population as Canada but is about as relevant as Nepal? Also why don’t Australians have culture? It seems like they just stole British and Canadian culture and just slapped the beach onto it? Truly a depressing people
>>
>>221139771
>why is country far away from everyone and everything less relevant
>>
>>221135516
This is how I feel about it too. There's a clear culture that exists on the ground but it's verboten to try and formalize that in any meaningful way. The elites have decided Australian culture is Abo shit and everything else is a foreign imposition.

This would be tolerable if we at least got British citizenship the way we used to but we don't. So we're stuck as these disowned, abandoned retards forbidden from ever moving beyond that.

I quite seriously would support a US takeover. Being American is 1000 times preferable to staying like this.

You do realize that this is precisely because your ruling class DOES want to just be an American resource extraction colony like any African shithole country? The Ranching and Mining magnates who run Australia had to literally be forced against their will to declare independence because they don't want the hassle that comes with being a real country and having to placate the commoners. They don't want Australia developing any sort of industrialized or non-foreign dependent economy because they would have to spend some of their mining/ranching profits to pay for it and to upkeep the lifestyles of the commoners. They outright wanted to prohibit Britain from shipping more white people over back in the 1800's because they wanted to be a small cadre of administrators ruling over a population of imported quasi-slaves who extracted the local natural resources like in India or the African Colonies. Making Australia some American outpost has been the plan they've been working towards ever since the 1960's when it became clear Britain could no longer do so. Just giving in and letting them do so would achieve the exact opposite of what you want.

I love Nick Cave, and CRIME AND THE CITY SOLUTION, that entire family of bands and music projects, and The Proposition is one of my favorite movies.

As an American this most everything that's gotten through to me form Australia. Never cared for Irwin either.

I don't want to be an outpost, I want to be properly integrated into a country that has a distinct culture of which its citizens can be proud. Being an outpost confers few benefits beyond military protection; being a state means voting rights and a share in the national history of a country that's actually done something.

We've given this thing a try for 125 years now. We're not going to suddenly enter a Renaissance. We're culturally and economically so blended with the US we might as well formalize it and request to become a state or at least a territory.

Seriously, more Australians can cite the fucking US constitution than our own. There's just no point keeping this LARP going.
>>
>>221139771
>Also why don’t Australians have culture?
Our country is only 200 years old and there's no such thing as australian people. We started out as a bunch of europeans. And now we're 99% indian/chinese.

If you're wondering why we don't make anything it's coz our government interferes with absolutely every industry and makes it impossible to get anything done due to absurd amounts of red tape and insane prices.
Our politicians are some of the most overpaid and corrupt people on the planet.

>why don’t Australians have culture? It seems like they just stole British and Canadian culture and just slapped the beach onto it?
What do you really expect though? Our origins are British/Euro and we kept close ties to Europe, so no shit it's going to be just the same thing with a beach. We only started distancing ourselves from British influence and culture sometime into the 1970s, before that we were just tropical England. We weren't even an independent country until the 20th century, so America had well over a century more than us to develop.

But that's the thing, America would only want you as an outpost. It's the same reason there haven't been any new states admitted in 70 years. Funnily enough for the same reasons as the Australian ruling class, they don't want to give a political voice or be responsible for the social services of Australia, they just want to strip it's resources as cheaply as possible.
>>
>>221139913
>There's a clear culture that exists on the ground
Our culture is being the Sardaukar of whoever is the dominant power at the time, it used to be Britain, now it’s the Americans, and maybe in the future it might be the Chinese (if they don’t shit the bed before that can happen)
