armor is effective against slashes not stabs. point of a blade has more force than a bullet. youre not stopping a stab with a 5mm sheet of bronze

He's in powerline and converging on centerline with the sword. Maximizes power with as little effort as possible. He should have his elbows down though, but whatever.

Having your arms down around your sides is an actual fighting stance. My sensei trained me in that, I had to hold that stance and then he kicked me for hours. If you ever get into a scuffle and see a man kneeling with his hands down like that you better run for your life.

I really don't think gays should use Ancient Greece and Rome as their arguments for how the past was so heckin gay and wholesome, considering the vast majority of homosexual sex at that time was pederastic and would be considered pedophilia and a crime today. It wasn't hairy masc men buttfucking each other, that would have been seen as gross. It was almost always an older guy and a younger guy, often as young as 13/14/15 maybe up to early 20s at best but point being, a lot of it was pederastic. And men certainly weren't getting married to each other.
>>
>>221152244
that is fake dumbass
>>
>>221152118
if that was the argument I would agree with you but, its not.
>>
>>221152297
Who is saying ancient Greece and Rome were wholesome?
>>
>>221152244
That's Zeus and Ganymede. Which wasn't a gay romance (or romance at all) until centuries after the Iliad. Their culture shifted over time and their retellings of ancient stories changed as well.
>>
>>221152314
This too. It's just made in the style of pieces from ancient greece, still after the original tellings of their myths and legends... when the gods were petty and cruel...

HERCULES

>>221152244

Gays are apparently considering they like to use Greek/Roman society as a defence for modern homosexual acceptance.

>>
>>221148791
It’s a fairly standard lunge thrust. Combines ideas from a few anachronistic systems because we don’t know much how people of this time period fought.

It’s odd this would be the thing you complain about in this fight. Achilles does his jumping stab attack, he holds his shield behind his back and he does that weird stab over his own shoulder and behind his neck with the spear. They’re all way more egregious, especially the last two, which are nonsense.

>>221151680
Even then, I still read it as that. There’s a moment earlier in the film where Achilles is training Patroclus, and he switches his sword to his off hand to win in a flashy way. Patroclus calls him out on breaking the rules of a sword fight and Achilles says
“When you know how to use it (your sword), you won’t be taking my orders”.

Another thing I never see people comment on is that Hector both starts the war, and ends his personal involvement in it, dishonourably.

Firstly, he stabs Menelaus, taking him by surprise and interrupting him as he’s about to win a fair duel. Then later, he drops fighting fairly to pick up a second weapon.

When Hector starts the duel with Achilles, Achilles takes off his helmet so that Hector will be able to see and know who he is fighting. Hector ignores the taunt, and voluntarily discards his own helmet, so they’re equally protected.

But after he’s tripped over the stone and dropped own shield, and Achilles has thrown his own shield away in response, Hector gets up, clearly panicking, with the broken end of a spear in his off hand.

This panic, and the resulting dishonour which bookends his story nicely only works if he’s realised Achilles really is a whole level above him. How does he realise? Achilles is fighting incorrectly on purpose, toying with him.

Therefore, I put it to the thread, that every time Achilles does some stupid kung fu shit, that’s actually good story telling. Tremble before mighty media literacy and despair.

Costumes and performances and fights are all great. Writing is 7/10 hits all the major story beats.

The hector vs achilles fight is electrifying. I still remember the tension in the theatre in 2004

>>
>>221156039
Of course, but the way he fights in the movie is clearly completely ridiculous compared to what an actual 'skilled warrior' would fight like at the time.

But the point is that having him be an anachronistic Kung Fu Ballet Knight is actually a pretty clever way of demonstrating to viewers that he is just so beyond everyone else at fighting that he makes it look like an art form, rather than aiming for any sort of historical accuracy

>>
>>221149561
You’ve never read Iliad then, because they constantly stab each other through armour or even helmets in it. They often even stab right through shields, too. I don’t know whether this is something that really happened due to the weakness of bronze, or if it only happens in Iliad because they’re mostly mighty heroes capable of such incredible feats.

I guess it could be called subversive, but there's nothing malicious or sinister about it, just people preferring not to refer to a religion they don't believe in.
