Just got done watching Special Effects. As is typical of the all the Larry Cohen films I've seen it's bizarre, awkward, somewhat haphazardly made, utterly charming and memorable. Zoë is the clear highlight as expected, she's utterly delightful in her dual role (I found her over the top JAP character particularly adorable) and acts circles around the rest of the cast. Also she gets to show off her body more than in Ms .45, which is a plus. It was super cool to see all the old school film and editing equipment being used and it made me want to go on ebay and buy a 16mm camera. There were some great visual moments even though the cinematography was a bit pedestrian overall. The only thing that really dampened my enjoyment was the soundtrack, it sounded like a first month piano student noodling around with the stock patches on a cheap sampler. Overall about a 6.5, flawed but very fun.

What does /film/ think of HDR releases of classic films?
>>221163766how much autism do you have? because it feels like a field where neither the bluray companies nor the paying consumers have any idea of how the technology works

>>221164082these are the pixels with the gamut outside the sdrI dont think it's worthy unless you buy tech demo films like Avatar 7 or Top Gun 5
>>221164082>>221164100I mean HDR is included with the 4K releases, and 4K is a very noticeable improvement over the regular Blu-ray, so it just adds to it overall. With old movies the HDR isn't too flashy but it does make the image look better.
How will they ruin this one?
>>221164131great, good for youI feel like it's a terrain where the disappointments are more obvious than the successes, so I try to avoid having a hard opinion because it can trigger my autism tendenciesplenty of autismo if you look for it on the net alreadyhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qG2L7UtTNbg
I find the more a person obsesses over image quality and things like HDR and 4k the less likely they are to have good taste or even understand half the things they watch, it's a common midwit trap. Most films are fine even as a dvd rip.
>>221164341If you can't see that 4K Blu-ray is a massive improvement over DVD then I don't know what to tell you.
>>221164373It's an improvement but not necessary. If I limited myself to 4k blu-rays the amount of movies I could watch would diminish significantly. Sure, if a 4k version of a film I care about exists, I'll pick that over a 1080p encode/remux. I just rarely come across such choices.

>>221164253ill buy it when its 50% off and let you know>>221164341there is definitely truth to faggots being like this but there is a massive visual improvement from dvd to 4k disc. seeing a 70 year old film in crystal clear quality is an enjoyable experience.ill always buy the best quality available if there is a disc release, but agree with the sentiment. pixel peeping faggots suck. 95% of them just watch denis villeneuve and tron slop on repeat
>>221164551I'm not saying you should limit yourself to only 4K releases, but I don't understand why so many people act like resolution doesn't even matter. Maybe they all just have shitty TVs.
How's the Marseille Trilogy?
>he doesn't watch his films in 16mm prints projected on a sheet that was once white but now has several yellow piss stainsNGMI
The issue now is that you have to wait to judge the new 4k releases to see if they’ve ruined the film- DNR, color grade, aspect ratio, etc.I’d rather watch a DVD that doesn’t have DNR or ridiculous color grade than a 4k that does.
>>221164785The thing I look for is if a release has the original audio track, or if they force you to listen to a Dolby Atmos remix. Disney is awful about this.

>>221177106>she was a very popular star back thenThing is, and actors really need to understand this, it's not your talent that forms your legacy as an actor, it's the films that you appear in.If you look at her filmography, you can tell that she was good, she was popular and sought after. But the directors she worked with? Mostly quite mediocre Hollywood studio establishment. The films she starred in? Mostly mass-produced mediocre Hollywood sluff that blended into the sea Hollywood slop of its time.I mean, sure, if you are a Humphrey Bogart or Audrey Hepburn, in other words a complete icon with a lot of charisma and a cult of personality surrounding you, you can get away with just that, no matter your filmography (not saying that Hepburn and Bogard didn't have some outstanding films though). But for your average actor, no, being popular among your peers and getting hired in Hollywood doesn't produce a long-lasting legacy no matter how good a performance you deliver. That was true back then, and it is true nowadays for all that capeshit slop studios shit out. It's why good actors should try to get out of that trap and try to work with "rogue" directors, or at least directors who try to add some creative drive to their commercial projects. And why terrible actors like "Zendaya", while being Hollywood's darling, will have leave behind no legacy whatsoever.
>>221177359Unironic truth nuke. It's so disheartening loving an actor's performance and later finding out that they never had an opportunity to give another like it again because their filmography is full of unremarkable flicks.
>>221177359>>221177426And then you have a guy like Eric Roberts who's a better actor than literally everybody else in Hollywood but chooses to star in 300 sloppiest of slops every year because he's more interested in working and getting paid than leaving a legacy; and is he wrong for doing so? Should he instead pick and choose his jobs more carefully, working less and making less money, just so after he's long dead or even just retired people look back at his career and go "wow what a great filmography"?
>Zo tired, bros...
>>221177687>is he wrong for doing so?Yes.>Should he instead pick and choose his jobs more carefully, working less and making less money, just so after he's long dead or even just retired people look back at his career and go "wow what a great filmography"?Yes.
>>221177740Go to sleep then.
>>221177687>Should he instead pick and choose his jobs more carefully, working less and making less money, just so after he's long dead or even just retired people look back at his career and go "wow what a great filmography"?Well, if he's a great actor, you can make the argument that his talent would serve all of us better if not wasted on slop. It's not just about legacy. That the altruistic choice would be to gift his talent to great projects and help make art. Of course, his decision is his to make.
>>221177781Yes, that is a better argument than the legacy one in my view.
>>221177800It's connected, and frankly, most actors do care about their legacy more. Viewers like us are obviously more concerned with getting good films.Inside and outside perspective on the same thing.

>>221178794>Dalle has been arrested on several occasions for shoplifting, drug possession and assault.[10] She has had run-ins with the law in France and was arrested for alleged drug possession in America. An investigation into a suspected drug trafficking network led to Dalle being questioned in Paris as a witness in 2005.[11]>Interviewed on the French TV programme Divan in 2016, Dalle stated that when she used to work in a morgue with her friends, they sold body parts of corpses, and while on acid, they ate a dead man's ear.[12][5] What's her problem?
>>221178809Busybodies trying to cramp her style.

>>221178982What does this mean?
>>221178882>that's not mass-produced mediocre Hollywood sluffIt pretty much boils down to that, yes. Look at her filmography and point to a film that REALLY stands out among the usual Hollywood slop of its time in terms of how it is remembered. You maybe can make an argument that a few of her films are technically more worthwhile than that, and I'm willing to entertain that idea. But they really did not leave a mark on the larger public record. And that's what we were talking about.

There was a thread the other day about if people prefer film grain or not in a movie... So what about SOUND grain in a film? This is just fucking grain sound non-stop alongside the proper audio, shit release from Eclipse wtf filter that shit you niggers

>>221179149>. Look at her filmography and point to a film that REALLY stands out among the usual Hollywood slop of its time in terms of how it is remembered.she goes from a Dick Tracy serial (the very definition of Hollywood slop) to winning the oscar for The Song of Bernardette. After that it's all O'Selznick's prestige titles and megaprojects like Duel In The Sun, which was more expensive than Gone With The Windwhat is your definition of slop?

>>221182603>let me guess, you're a festivalslop fan?Not really. There are of course many good festival entries, but also a lot of trash. But more importantly, there's a wide range of films between your "festialslop" and the trite unimaginative hardcore-mainstream shit Hollywood studios pump out. And most films I really like are somewhere in that wide range. Now, to your actual point: If you enjoy mainstream stuff, even if just some of it from a specific era, that's great for you. Nothing wrong with that. But please don't pretend that those films have any staying power in the public eye. They get their fifteen minutes in the spotlight, then the audience moves on to the next thing. That's how the "industry" works. Has to work, because it's all about money. And ten years later, people barely remember it. Two generations later, and it's basically forgotten. And, yeah, in 2070, some guy on some imageboard will post "but I watch and enjoy those superhero flicks from the 2010s", and he'll be the same kind of outlier you are now. And it'll be fine. But no one will remember who Zendaya was.
