Remember DVD menus?
>>
Its a niche art, like music videos. Tomb raider had the planet set as the dvd menu.
>>
>>221156390
Blu Ray menus having no style or character kind of feels like an early case of enshitification.
>This isn't the late 90s anymore. We don't have to make this look cool just to please you. We've got your money, now fuck off.
>>
2000-2010 or so, they actually put a lot of effort into them, especially the early years, the menus were actually one of the selling points to list on the back
>>
https://youtu.be/fb5vW-c4UL0?is=uD2DOT9pCizQwf08
>>
>>221156422
Way more niche than music videos. Will be completely forgotten by time if they were ever experienced in the first place.
>>
>>221156390

Some dvds even cockblock you if you pause the movie so you cant even enjoy a freeze frame. I had Michelle trachtenberg in eurotrip in the slideshow for years and to think that some company would stop that is unacceptable!

???
>>
The first time I saw adverts before the DVD menus, like VHS's had, I knew it was over.
>>
>>221156425
Kinda related. I remember my heart sinking when I first got a video game with a single piece of paper instead of an instruction manual. I quickly told myself caring about that was stupid, but in retrospect maybe I was nooticing the death of our civilization's SOVL.
>>
>>221156390
yes
another reason along with dvd commentary that I dislike netflix.
>>
>>221156506
>The first time I saw adverts before the DVD menus, like VHS's had, I knew it was over.
Same, when I first went to the movie theater and they showed a fucking car commercial before the previews.
>>
>>221156422
>Tomb raider had the planet set as the dvd menu.

imagine having to walk all the way to Abu Dhabi to press the motherfucking play button
>>
The true loss is the often excellent behind the scenes documentaries for films. Now they're usually barebones, and are entirely excised from streaming.
>>
>>221156444
like all novel things there's a burst of innovation and creativity when corporations are forced to compete for market share, once they have it they back off on the effort and put in the bare minimum.
>>
>>221156598
Im Going to look at.what that stupid planetarium thing is called.
>>
>>221156425
Blu Rays also often have terrible cover art even compared to DVDs of the same movie
>>
>>221156609
All of the extra content around the movies themselves has been sparse in modern times which is sad. Things like these had soul:

Back when, one of the draws to the Ultima® games was you would get a nice 10x12 cloth full color map, huge instruction manual with all kinds of lore and creature data and trinkets like an ankh or moonstone etc al. I always felt that THAT was what made people want to buy the game, instead of just pirate it. You get more and have more of a collectable than just the digital pixels

What's funny is that now the DVDs have the simplistic no frills designs. It's like they're shaming you for choosing the "inferior" format.

There was a Star Wars DVD release that had scenes from the film turned into the different menus. Little cumbersome but I appreciate the effort.

The VHS cover is no doubt visually better but the DVD cover is also good because it's a trojan horse. Parents think they're buying their kids some sterile woodland rodent friendslop but little do they know their little ones are about to be exposed to raw unfiltered kino.

Yes. I remember their ugly animations that were unskippable. The interface was unresponsive as well and it'd take you ages if you wanted to set up special features like commentary. Don't forget the baked in ads for other movies or even products.
It's so bad people would rip the movies onto multiple CDs even if they owned the DVD. Thanks YIFI!

>>

Music videos are still getting made
>>
Let me guess, a youtuber made a video about this exact topic
>>
Sometimes if you went to a certain word and pressed the right direction, you'd be able to select something in the environment for a secret deleted scene /bonus video like an old commercial or message from the actor/director
I remember national treasure had a puzzle within the extras, where watching each bonus video would give you parts of a code, then you'd need to find a puzzle box in the scene like fuckin eye-spy and input the code somehow. DVDs we're only around for a little while but they were fun while they were most relevant and companies gave a shit

There's no point in spending money on elaborate menus and extensive BTS features when the disc will sell the same (unless it's something that's been constantly re-released) regardless. The physical market is dying out. It peaked in the mid/late-00s, which means you're 20 years past that.

In 2023, Mario was the best selling BD/DVD release of the year in the U.S. It grossed $22 million: https://web.archive.org/web/20250117152312/https://www.the-numbers.com/home-market/packaged-media-sales/2023

>I miss the days when the only ads you'd get before a movie were static image voice-overs for local businesses that showed before they even dimmed the lights.
Even that is too much. For us, it was just the stupid movie trivia slides. The only allowable ads are for the concession stand.

Does anyone even watch DVDs any more. I'd like to burn some, and make it so if you leave it in and running, there's a screamer on the main menu but hard-core pornography. Kids movie DVDs, leave them in people's garage sales so the person who buys it thinks it the garage sale people

And now it always will be. When theaters
began losing their edge against home media and the internet in the 2000s, they could have decided to reverse their policy of decades of hostility against their own paying customers. But no, they doubled down on being assholes, and the experience has only gotten worse in every way.

My wife will never again suffer the indignity of hiding outside candy in her purse, like we're criminals trying to sneak heroin into prison. No, not when the Blu-ray will be released in a month, for less than the cost of 2 tickets, and we can watch it in the comfort of our own home, with superior A/V, more comfortable seating, unlimited food & drink, a pause button for bathroom breaks, not a single fucking commercial/ad, and no rowdy black teenagers except the ones by daughter is "dating" in her room on any given night.

The theaters might still have served a purpose for special releases that served as social events for, uh, "like-minded" people in small towns, but we don't live in one of those towns, and anyway Hollywood doesn't make the kind of movies that we can get excited about anymore. So sorry about your job Robert, but we look forward to your theater being bulldozed for something more useful, like an Amazon warehouse or a landfill.

A short promotional interview with the cast and director, and a director & producer commentary you can enable for the movie

Remember Easter Eggs? Every time I see 664, I think "You want 664, the bloke next door," from an Iron Maiden DVD Easter Egg.

I have the "loop" sound of DVD menus etched into my brain, even thought I can't think of how any specific one exactly went. I can just somehow hear the sound of a DVD menu fading out, ending, then fading back in as its own unique audio aesthetic in my mind. Real ones will understand what I'm saying.

the worst thing is that it takes so little to make you appreciate whatever you bought more. just getting a simple sticker or a mini poster when i buy a record makes me want to support the label or band even more. but no almost no one gives you shit. just jews cutting corners where corners can be cut.

Honestly gave movies a memorable vibe
The soul has been stripped from literally everything
