She didn't know how good she had it, and she never had to actually deign to try and put herself in someone else's shoes. It's frustrating because it could have been Hughes' best film. A fair amount of stuff was left out of the final cut, but who knows if any of it would have made a difference. I find it interesting how much this movie's reputation and popularity has grown with other people my age. I thought it was only popular in the Midwest but it's apparently a pretty beloved film regardless of location or ethnicity here when it used to be considered one of the weaker Hughes movies.I'm all for it of course, it's Hughes kino in its purest form.
