When I turned 14
I remember reading they hated the first three seasons of the show which made me sad because I loved when it wasn’t a constant commentary on whatever was going on in that moment in society. You see the ones that people love are like the one where Stan’s Dad gets in constant fights at the baseball games, has nothing to do with anything. Just a funny story.
When they started making the whole episode in one week. After that it was all references and reusing the same joke 10 times per episode.
Three or four years after the movie when they ran out of fun adventure plots and started relying on "pop issue of the week" plots that ensured the episodes were dated by the time they aired.

It was somewhere around the member berries, PC Principal era and allowing Randy to become the central character. There was a cultural shift happening that Trey and Matt couldn't account for and reality became too surreal for them to parody once Trump got into office. After "You're Getting Older Now", they officially tapped out and allowed the show to be taken over by younger writers with them in the background guiding it along without fully immersing themselves into it and as a result, they've softened their edge because they want into the upper echelons of Hollywood after being on the periphery of it for so long.
