Adam Driver outacts Ewan McGregor, and Driver had almost NOTHING to work with in the sequels. Just his expressions tell a story the script can't. Driver just went on set and made up a movie in his head to act for.

Lucas and co. worked really hard on TESB only to discover they would simply never, ever dazzle people as much as they did with Star Wars. Fans didn't like the grim ending, they didn't like this or that, it's all rationalizing. The fatal flaw of the prequels is that they carry the Star Wars name and must prioritize repetition of the Star Wars experience over being good film. The movie was simply a tremendous visual and audio spectacle. You cannot make "more Star Wars" because it stops being spectacular and new after the first, this is the paradox which entrapped George.
