The irony of the entire franchise is the moment when it actually starts getting good (when Edward goes shiny for the first time) is the moment when /tv/ stopped watching. Up until that point it's just a female power fantasy, which /tv/ rightly hates, but that's kind of on purpose. It's Bella's liberation from mundanity. After that she starts to learn, then she starts to grow, and then she takes control of the story and empowers herself to her end as vampire, mother, and wife to the man she chooses. And that's not something the story does for her, that's something the character drives throughout. But the really cool bit is at the same time the movie is an exploration of masculinity through female eyes. I don't think it does it perfectly, but it's lightyears beyond anything else.
