What is his best film? His untreated mental illness should really be talked about more.I know he admitted he was molested. Pretty obvious the food cope thing was from that. But also he is extremely dysfunctional about how he bragged about never learning director skills in his monologues, and then he breaks down for a second and sobs and says he knows he should have, then recovers into his persona. Obviously he had a mental block about learning directing , almost as if he didn’t want to be there deep down but is stuck now
>>221175384The one that is the most timeless and overall most competent is probably Dogma.
Clerks is his only good movie, and it's not as good as Clerks TAS, which was great because of David Mandel and Brian Kelley. Kevin still gets credit for doing something good because it was his show and when the professional sitcom writers pitched tons of jokes in his writing room, he put them in and wasn't too precious about his characters.
>>221175384>before gooning to your daughterand>after 1,000 hours of gooning
It's cus he got molested as a kid and then mind and soul raped by leftists in Hollywood. Imagine being genuinely one of the best indie filmmakers of the era and every new film you make gets shit on by retards. Red State was literally the film where I thought this guy can actually make movies that are not biographical comedy dramas. I haven't seen the 4:30 Movie but Clerks, Jay and Bob Strike Back, and Jay and Bob Reboot were probably my favorites.
His cameo on ATHF

The one where his daughter gets naked
>>221175384Clerks is his best, Chasing Amy is good, and I’ve always liked Tusk because it’s a good body horror movie and Michael Parks is one of my favorite actors.
He really is shit at directing. His movies still look like somebody’s just handed him a video camera and told him to go at it.
>>221175526I think clerks = dogma > chasing amy > mallrats > powergap ………..> jay and slight bob 1 and 2 > powergap > everything else that I have seen.4:30 movie was fine, it just lacked a certain je ne sais quoi.Same as cop out.Jay and bob movies were just too cringe. Cringe before the word was used commonly. That’s how I felt at the time, cringy.Zack and Muir poreno even worse. It’s interesting how connected he was forever, he had such good buzz in the early 90s he was still getting tier S actors in his films for decades.Shoutout to mallrats, I think was inappropriately shit on, I enjoyed it a lot as a teen and in my 20s.
>>221175605Seriously though, being handed Bruce Willis and Morten felt like he was always punching above his league.

Just completely makes no senseDogma is good overall but it has a limited appealJ+SB Strike Back is too goofy and is held back by being a standard theatrical movie. It's best material is in the deleted scenesJersey Girl is cute and comfy. It's aged extremely wellZack and Miri is okay. It tries to ape the Apatow formula despite Smith not realizing there are stark differences between Apatow and himself. The porn scenes and the shit shot might be too bracing for a lot of peopleCop Out is bland and unfunnyRed State is different and is interesting. It's political commentary is toothless, shallow, and muddied and it's ending is pointlessTusk and Yoga Hosers are nonsensical stoner ramblings made into a movieJ+SB Reboot has a good central theme on parent-child relationships but all the contemporary Hollywood snark is unfunny. It's also shot horriblyClerks 3 is full of jokes that you've heard a half dozen times over if you're a Smith fan. Also overflowing with nerd references that serve no purpose. And it's ending is even worse than the original ending of Clerks 1Haven't seen the 4:30 movie
>>221175714He has 16 live films under his name.15 of which are his complete products,

>>221175384he looked so cool when he was a fatass. just a chill, normal, fat dude making low-budget comedies. he was doing shared universe films before they were popular.

>>221175384It must suck when ever people who defend your movies concede that you're fundamentally a low brow childish slob with no real understanding of the medium.
>>221175755> with nerd references that serve no purposeThey just didn’t hit right. I already felt that way with clerks 2.Clerks 1 felt real, like how they endlessly talk about starwars (like we do here). The LotR vs Star Wars rant in clerks two was completely off, there is no real nasty tinged amicus between LotR fans and starwars fans.I understand it came from his talks, which means it was just a bunch of yesmen happy to be a part of his club laughing. It was the first time I felt genuinely disgust at his writing. Also I didn’t like that they still worked in fast food. Even losers move up the food chain a little in 10+ years, another “not writing what you know” thing
>>221175384>What is his best film?clerks 1 is best. but i also liked clerks 2 and dogma.
>>221175384>>221175808Clerks is his best movie and yes, in retrospect it's blatant he has no true artistic skill of his own.Notice how immediately after Clerks all of his other movies were just generically shot like any other Hollywood movie. He was tard wrangled by technical guys. Then he makes movies by himself like Yoga Horses and Clerks 3 and 4:20 and they're TUBI Original tier. He doesn't know what to do.Clerks was artistic by mere coincidence. He was highly restricted by lack of tech, he basically had a black & white film camera and his friends. He had to improvise and he had no choice but do things unconventionally, be it narratively, visually or editing wise. The black and white image also did a lot of the work, adding a melancholic tone to the film simply automatically.
>>221175808He hasn’t always had a weird mix of huge aura jogging and extreme ceingelord.>tait, brown area. It’s got to be the most cringey way to refer to anal. Even worse than saying a brown star or Hersey highway, or mud stick
Going back to what he does now, 4:20 movie was in my opinion his worst one yet. Not because of it being unbearable nonsense like Yoga Horses or a sappy glorified YouTube video that is Clerks 3. But because of how artistically void it is. At least Yoga Horses is some weird B movie shit with corny special effects. At least Clerks 3 is genuine Kevin Smith venting about hitting the old age. 4:20 is totally fake, it's an attempt at something like The Fableman's but it's clear that none of this is actually Kevin Smith's real venting (like Clerks 3 previously). It's just a manufactured collection of clichés about this kind of movie, it's so fucking obvious and fake that you barely can make it through the movie because it lacks any immersion. The visuals are also his worst yet, in a weird way. Clerks 3 looked like a Nostalgia Critic skit but 4:20 is shot in these weird ass claustrophobic mid-shots almost entirety, with zero room for any imagery to breathe, it's so noticeable and grating I thought I'm taking crazy pills or something. And the fake ass barely noticeable 80s bloom effect on top of everything only added insult to injury. One of the biggest pieces of shit I sat through.
Name a Hollywood more insecure than Kevin Smith.
>>221175384>admitted he was molested Damn, it’s actually true. Kind of explains a lot. But Clerks is his best.
>>221175975Yep.I mean I’m enjoying shitting on him because that’s what celebs are for.But in real life you should always show great love and kindness to people, even the cringelords, Becuase there is a good chance they got kneecapped by life before they started highschool and never recovered.
>>221175940I almost laughed at the movie theater owner ken jeong bits, almost, like I could see how the joke might work.I also thought she was actually cute and likable. Which shows some movie craft skill. I usually don’t feel that for female romantic leads that easily. Also the wrestler was somewhat funny. The rest of the fake movies were extremely cringe tier though (also this joke of Hollywood making fun of Hollywood tropes is so played). You could tell he was desperate and was copying jokes from better films all over the place. It just had too much cringe though, like his older brother fucking in the theater. And he just had to have some weird speech between the 50 year old female usher and the fanboy that was supposed to be a silent bob -stic profound moment and you were too aware that that was what was going on, didn’t feel genuine at all.
Tusk is his best film and it starts to fall off the moment you realize it's a Kevin Smith film (when Johnny Depp shows up.)If you like Mallrats or Clerks you should just watch Gary Burns' films instead.
>>2211758841 and 2 kept the references to a minimum. The Star Wars bit in 1 actually reflects the greater thematic arc of Dante's character. That's why it's so memorable. The SW vs LOTR bit in 2 is just there but it's at least funny. There's also the Transformers references but those are throwawayIn 3, they just throw them out in every scene just to throw them out. It's like reading Ready Player One. And doing it during Dante's funeral was really fucking shittyI've known plenty of people who are perma entry-level so that didn't really bother me at all

Dogma
>>221175384While I think Dogma and Redstate are the better movies overall. Mallrats captured the cultural zeitgeist of the early 90s better than any other film or television at the time. Watching that movie now and realizing just how unbelievably different zoomers have it compared to millenials is lowkey disquieting.
Only saw Dogma, but it was fun. Also I saw his story about Jon Peters on Youtube. That was fun.
>>221175464Red State was great except he should have kept the original ending.
>>221175754Was always my favorite.
Smith got called out on Cop/Out by Bruce Willis for not even knowing what lenses did and what lenses were and how lenses are to be used and how to use what lenses in what scenes and anything to do with fucking camera lenses because Smith is a film school drop out that lucked into the industry. That, and Bruce was pissed off at how much weed Kevin was smoking on set. That being said, Smith's good when he's in his lane; he's very dialogue heavy and its a very distinctive cadence and rhythm too if you listen to him long enough. Clerks is a classic. Mallrats was all right. Dogma is probably his most earnest and well written film. Jay & Silent Bob Strikes Back is the most fun and I feel he hit a high watermark with Clerks II. Zack & Miri was a crossroads cuz that's where he met Rogen and his weed obsession got tenfolded for years. The bitch about Smith is that he literally got to work with Hollywood heavyweights like Shannon Doherty, George Carlin, Chris Rock, Will Smith, Ben Affleck and he rubbed shoulders with Tarantino and Rodriguez and regarded them as friends and contemporaries; its almost a fever dream looking back on it. Now? It seems like he fell out of favour with the in crowd and is no longer in that group. (probably due to Harvey's arrest) That being said, he's got his strengths being a fantastic orator.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_RDzOgM3H0&t=113sAnd he also gave commentaries on the original Batman quadrilogy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojrNy_2PHN8https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPQ0BSor-rw&t=7068shttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3tbONeVXCwhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGU35HLo5tA&t=3035sIts easy and hard to hate Smith at the same time; he literally did what everyone here wishes: made a movie, got it popular enough to break into Hollywood and he was just the nerdy fat kid that that got into the cool kids club. And just like the nerdy fat kid, he spills his spaghetti, fucks it all up somewhere down the line, now no one returns his calls.
>>221177682I agree with all your sentiments, but you use filler words like "literally," and your syntax is cloying and patronizing. I don't respect your vying tone. >>221175525Which one is that?
>>221175384Not one of his films is good start to finish. Clerks 1 is full of dates star wars references and unrealistic long conversations about autistic shit no one cares about. Clerks 2 has the MC act like a gay man painting the nails of the black chick and then magically having her do all the work getting him to stay when he had a decent looking blonde woman with a job lined up for him all ready to go. Clerks 3 is the most self indulgent shit I've ever seen with an unironcally cuckold fantasy in it where his wife talks about getting DP'd in heaven. And the clerk's movies are his "best". He also bitches about Harvey Weinstein despite working for him directly. >>221175914Clerks 1 was shot like a 1930s film and I don't mean that positively. >>221175578>His movies still look like somebody’s just handed him a video camera and told him to go at it.Well that's really how he does it. And it's sometimes said but not that often said that most directors and most people in general have no fucking idea what they're doing, they just pretend that they do. Bruce Willis called him out for it and that was after he had directed like a dozen films.
>>221177682>Smith got called out on Cop/Out by Bruce Willis for not even knowing what lenses did and what lenses were and how lenses are to be used and how to use what lenses in what scenes and anything to do with fucking camera lenses because Smith is a film school drop out that lucked into the industry. It's funny that at least Renny Harlin who did Die Hard 2 when he was just starting has openly admitted that he didn't really have a fucking clue what he was doing and he just assumed how the technical things should work and then went with that. But apparently he got along with Bruce Willis since he's not a fat weed addict.
Clerks 2 is by far his best film since it's an actually funny movie with a perfectly cromulent plot, a good 3/5 lewd comedy. Of course it looks blatantly cheap but it's funny and has charm. Clerks 1 is an annoyingly overrated hipster flick that isn't outright bad and it's a very respectable achievement considering what he had. The rest are shit.Zack and Miri was offensively bad and I haven't watched any of them after that because I assume that they're more of the same.

>>221178413The shots in Clerks are decent, even if likely by accident. The movie manages to create space and make you feel like you're actually observing something real, it's almost fly-on-the-wall. Which makes for an interesting contrast with the often over the top characters. The conversations aren't unrealistic, you can definitely imagine these kind of spherical nerds in a vacuum having those. To me, in tone and asthetically the first Clerks is almost like a Jim Jarmusch movie, except the whole thing was fully accidental.

>>221186329His little talks are a dangerous feedback loop for him. You need to start with it is already a biased crowd. The reason they are there is to feel a part of something. They don’t get to feel a part of something if they don’t support whatever he says. It is the same with people that go to Star Trek cons or rifftrax live shows. They are there to feel a part of a community first. When he goes into his Bruce Willis bit they smilie knowingly before he even says anything besides the intro. So he gets all this laughter and smiles and claps from a bad bit. Which just encourages him to tell it more often. It’s like training yourself wrong on purpose. >>221186862Amen brother.
>>221186813Anyone who's gooning to pictures of Kevin Smith's daughter needs to be institutionalized for life.
>>221186813>break from reality. It’s actual not super uncommon heavy pot smokers. No not all of them, some can go forever with no such problem , but maybe 5% of them. Which is a small amount but also not rare
>>221186699Didn't he apologize after the turth got out about Bruce's condition?
>>221177682When he was making a shoestring black and white indie movie you could excuse this but when you're making a film for Warner Brothers you'd think he would at least have a DP or cinematographer to sort out the technical stuff like lenses.
>>221186868He is like the good pervert. What do I mean ?If you ever notice the best hentai and manga are written by people who also make super unhinged perverted stuff you don’t like becuase it’s too edgy. But they also make normal porn, but somehow they make the best most erotic normal porn , like they need to be an extra pervert weirdo crossing the edge to also be better on this side of the edge than people who never cross it.
>>221187015I don't read chinese cartoons anon, I'm a normie
>>221187001Well that’s the story, Bruce was mad he asked his DP instead of knowing himself. He knew what he wanted just not the names and numbers
Honestly, Bruce Willis was probably more annoyed at having to work with Tracy Morgan, who is a completely insufferable person. But he didn't want to be racist so he just henpecked Kevin the whole time.Sounds exactly like something a Boomer would do.
>>221187037That's the whole point of having a good DP. Sounds like Bruce was being pissy.
Your boos mean nothing, I have seen what makes you cheer.
>>221180496Drew Carrey's got to be on that list, too.
If you’re a longtime kevin hater like me then you owe it to yourself to watch this:https://youtu.be/bXMGvPsNzaMHis attitude is just demented. So incredibly passive aggressive.
>>221187175Tracy Morgan seems nice and well meaning but completely aloof and impossible to wrangle and that would get annoying quickly. But Kevin Smith seems like a relentlessly annoying pissant.
>>221188193That was truely awful podcast, worse than Kevin smith. Never post in my thread again
>>221175464>Jay and Bob RebootI am offended that I have to share this gay earth with idiots like you.
>Director self-inserts into fake scenario that would never happen irl to trash talk The Lord of the Rings with the most brain dead takes while his opponent is unable to refute anything because they are too busy vomiting>Later decides He-Man would be so much better if Adam was killed off and the show was about a dyke instead.
>You now remember that time Kevin smith tried to pass his ugly wife off next to models
