Theon's plan to take Winterfell was incredibly shaky. He marched 30 men several hundred kilometers with detection somehow, and then relied on 4 men to open the gate. If Ser Rodrik had left 100 men, or even 50, of the 600 he raised, Theon's plan would fail. If a guard left behind noticed a grapnel, Theon's plan would fail. If a rope snapped, Theon's plan would fail. If Alebelly was looking the other way in the turret, Theon's plan would fail.
And that's not even going into how deus ex machina Ramsay's arrival with 600 cavalry to scatter Rodrik's host is.

Practically speaking, Robb never actually had to return North, but the plot demanded it.

Fire and Blood is cool as a summary of plot beats, it just needed to be fleshed out with actual characterization and interpersonal drama, something the show writers could have done. Instead they chose to make the show entirely about their grief over Dany losing being just like watching Hillary lose 2016 all over again, and chose to make HotD a fixfic prequel about how Dany, because she's descended from Rhaenyra, was the TRUE and HONEST chosen one this whole time.

Rhaenyra is perfect and pure and virtuous, all who oppose her are one dimensionally evil and they are only against her because they hate women THAT much. The entire show is just about how women are inherently moral and all men are evil. The Greens don't have any human relationships, they're just selfish and evil and are constantly plotting against each other, meanwhile the Blacks are all so nice and always have each others backs to the point there is no conflict and it's boring to watch. The show is more interested in preaching the virtues of 21st century liberal feminism than being an actually compelling story
