Gohan didn't want to fight and train at first but he had to step up to save Earth and defeat Cell. He was living a more normal life but then when he saw crime in the city, he intervened and stopped it. He liked fighting injustice and saving people and adapted his Saiyaman persona to be like a super hero. He found that can be more gentle and less of a fighting maniac than Goku and Vegeta while still loving Earth and wishing to protect it and its people. And for people calling it cringe, Gohan likes it and his wife thinks it's the coolest thing in the world which is all that matters.

Also, even though Goku is the main character of the entire Dragon Ball franchise, the end of the Cell Saga didn't give the other characters any proper closure. I don't care what anyone thinks, I quite like the actual ending Dragon Ball Z we got with Goku flying off into the sunset with Uub to train Uub as his successor. We know Goku won't live forever, so it makes sense that he'd want to train a successor and it's poetic that the greatest defender of Earth after Goku is gone is the benevolent human reincarnation of an evil cosmic monster that destroyed Earth. The fact that Uub is completely a human is kino because it shows that even pure-blooded humans can rise to the same levels of greatness as Saiyans through self-effort. Too bad GT wasted Uub's potential, but then again, I never considered GT to be canon in the first place. GT is just a fun alternate universe, in my opinion.

The whole arc is built up around 17/18 (kinda lol) but nope editor hates them too so Toriyama has to pull Cell out of his ass and force him into the story. But even 17/18 weren't the original plan, 19/20 were, but the editor didnt want a fat mime and an old man to be the baddies even though they were fine. So the entire revenge against Goku subplot is just dropped since Gero dies pretty much right away. Now the story is just that the villains are just uh doing things because .. they just do okay??
