Any oldanons here? Was Seattle really cozy back in the early 90s?
so cozy
>>221191703who's that?
>>221191626>Any oldanons here? Was Seattle really cozy back in the early 90s?Old anon here. Early 90s? Like 1991 or 1992? Yes everything was cozier back then. Soviets were defeated. Cold War was over. Military was making budget cuts and the economy was roaring. The general vibe was positive and peaceful. Life was much slower. Politics didn't invade your daily life like it does today. Back then, if didn't want to learn about current events then you just turned off the TV news and went about your day. Internet was not a thing. Cell phones were giant bricks with crappy reception and only rich people had them. You could spend your whole life not paying attention on politics, and just hang out with friends and family. Or maybe meet a girl locally, ask her out, start a relationship, get serious, and start your own family. There was no such thing as social media or Instagram. Girls weren't DM'ing 50 other guys on Instagram or posting pictures for attention or likes. Her social life was just the people she knew. So if you were a teen you had a decent chanxe of asking out your school crush. Or as an adult, you had a good chance of asking out the cute girl at the bar or corner store cute grocery clerk. She wouldn't record you and laugh at you on the internet like today.Homeless were not everywhere and they didn't brazenly camp out on the sidewalk like they do today. The 1990s wasn't perfect and I'd say the 1980s were better, but the 90s was probably the last decade the working man could make a living on coastal cities like Seattle. Pay was still good.Jobs were still available. Housing prices were rising but it was still possible to buy a house if you were committed and locked in early.I truly feel sorry for the current generation. They will never experience the peace, great economy, and no internet era of the early 90s. TV shows like Frasier exaggerate it a bit, but it wasn't far off from the truth. It was a good decade.

>>221191626I'm glad Almost Live came on Comedy Central, otherwise I'd never have seen it. Such a low budget and Seattle-centric show to be broadcast nationally too. There's a reunion of the main cast on youtube, I think most of them have retired from whatever they did after Almost Live. Nancy Guppy is still cute
>>221191703Did she ever get over the Lymes disease? And the gaynigger assault?
>>221191871Sweet summer child
>>221191899pre grunge seattle was nice, still had its blue collar base, very chill, nice rainy season, nice summer. It got worse as grunge became the thing and then the internet era just wrecked it.
>>221191871Bless your heart
>the dream of the 90s lives in portlandopening line of portlandia. the pacific northwest encapsulated what living in the 90s was like, even after the 90s were over. But not anymore, obviously.
>>221192849It would be depressing to grow up in Seattle in the 70s and 80s and then be old enough to watch that part gradually get erased beginning in the 90s and going nonstop even now. Truly the end of a cultural era for that town.
>>221192863I’ve noticed when tv shows mention your city it’s about 5 seconds until that shit is done.Fucking Liz Lemon offhandedly mentioned Raleigh, NC in an episode of 30Rock and overnight the town became a fucking cesspool Keep my name outcha fuckin mouth
>>221191626old, old anon here and Seattle was very cozy in the '60s and early '70s. It is where I grew up. It was a logging town before that and became a financial center after WWII. Nobody gave the okace a thought until the series "Here Come the Brides" came out, starring teen heart-throb Bobby Sherman. Most Californians didn't like the weather that much but a lot came up in the early '70s anyway. People in Oregon used to be very hostile toward them as they drove north and didn't want them sticking around Oregon at all.
>>2211916261990s was probably the last decade of cozy time for Seattle. Internet ruined it. Cities are perfect when there's a solid blue collar base and prices are affordable. Places like Seattle, San Francisco, etc use to be cool and cozy. Then drugs and homeless took over.
>>221193158Almost as old anon. Live there in the mid 80s. $200 per month shithole studio on Stewart street downtown. It was a seedy town but the homeless were more contained and there was still a lot of older buildings from the prewar era still around. Tbf, Seattle has always had a rough sketchy vibe downtown.
>>221191626I used to live in the apartment just to the right of Nile's earlobe. It wasn't the 90s but 2000s and it was my first place after graduating college and getting a "real" job. I used to go on night walks to familiarize myself with the city and while there was the occasional bum, it was nothing like it is today.
>>221194018Do you miss living in a high rise?
>>221193329>Seattle has always had a rough sketchy vibe downtownIt was mostly contained around upper Belltown when I was there. I did a college summer internship at a big company downtown and made the mistake of staying in the least expensive monthly rate place I could find within walking distance and there were bums, crack and hookers everywhere.
I had little apartment on Queen Anne with a view of some water and the PI Globe. Felt like I was in a tv show about life in the big city.
>>221192879>It would be depressing to grow up in Seattle in the 70s and 80s and then be old enough to watch that part gradually get erasedThis is why cobain, cornell, and staley all killed themselves
>>221193329>It was a seedy town but the homeless were more containedlook up the origins of the term "skid row" (aka homelessness)
>>221194151How long ago was that? What was the neighborhood like then? Do you miss your old place?
>>221194062>Do you miss living in a high rise?Sometimes. There are lots of people to meet and interesting places and things to see and do. I was never bored, that's for sure. Night life was great. Spendy though.
>>221191626This is insane
>>221194221Just remember how many people are transients and don't get counted for one reason or another. Visa workers and the like. I'd say census figures are pretty inaccurate in a lot of ways
>>221193329>Tbf, Seattle has always had a rough sketchy vibe downtown.Pretty much. Lot of people who never lived it speculating about how things were give an extremely warped view on how things were to young people. The older I get the more I realize how much the spirit of things don't really change. Superficial aspects and the flavor of things change but the underlying pressures and issues are shockingly consistent over time. The one thing that unmistakably has changed that I will never forgive is the fucking traffic. I remember being a young man in the 80s and early 90s and being able to jump on 405 near where I lived in Factoria at just about any hour of the day and not even have to think about traffic reports or how long it was going to take to get somewhere unless some dumbass rolled their jeep on the freeway. And traffic on i5? Forget about it. So much for that.
>>221194221Around season 4 or 5 of Frasier, I noticed I hadn't seen a single black person in quite some time.It wasn't until the later seasons, like 10 and 11, that you could tell they were deliberately adding in more non-whites for representation. Like his rival in the apartment building or the temporary cohost on his radio show. It's like watching a condensed version of real world racial decline.
>>221194198it was mid-late 90s. Neighborhood was great, Lower Queen Anne was pretty good for young people then, good bars and decent food. Old brick building, so kind of cramped especially the kitchen but it had some nice little touches and big window so I was happy. Definitely miss it in that time but I wouldn't go back now. They redeveloped a lot of it, prices are higher, I'm sure it's got plenty of homeless. But it was great back then.
i was in seattle in 2010 and 2011 for pax and i remember it being le friggin kino city
>>221191626Seattle has always blown dick. People there are ugly, gross, and fucking rude
>>221194221They breed relentlessly, with reckless abandon. It's dey culcha, in fact. Just look at any medium or big city and their yoof. Glocktavious and/or Edgar. I think there's actually a larger population than recorded because they're notoriously difficult to accurately census.
>>221191899You’re forgetting that niggers went absolutely wild with crack in the mid 90’s and had homicide rates that weren’t seen again until post St. Floyd. I guess that wasn’t an issue for the PNW but still 90’s wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows.
>>221194371>I guess that wasn’t an issue for the PNWIt wasn't much then but it is now. Loads of blacks left those cities and moved to Portland, Seattle and Tacoma (Tacompton) only to shit out more dem keeds (sans fathers) only for them to repeat the same bs. It's almost as if it's a part of dey culcha and inescapable.
>>221194221>nintendo
>Seattle has always blown dick. People there are ugly, gross, and fucking rude
>>221194361It's just a nonwhite thing. The future is going to be massive urban slums that are 90% nonwhite while the majority of the countryside is white.
>>221191626It was destroyed by the same process Minneapolis Minnesota was.
>>221194443>It wasn't much then but it is now. What do you mean? It absolutely was then. In fact it was worse then percapita than it was at any time since. The entire legacy of "tacompton" was born from gang violence in the 80s that had basically stopped by the turn of the decade. Hilltop wasn't dangerous proper after like 93 at the latest. These days you're more likely to get hit in the head with a dildo by some trustfund retard with neon hair than even see a black guy with any gang affiliations in that area.
>>221194478You could afford this as a radio therapist in 1994
>>221194443Idk I’m in Portland and niggers are not thriving here. Portland is scrambling to try and keep their one historically black area black and they aren’t succeeding. But they’ve more than made up for it by welcoming the absolute dregs of the whites. So many white junkies on the streets. A lot of them child molesters. This is known as a place where cops are soft so they flock here from all over the country. And the regular people here just won’t talk about it. They act like hobos are just regular fauna you’d see in the city, like rats or pigeons. They don’t see any problem with it and think it’s totally normal. Clearly rent is too high. If it were 30% cheaper the schizophrenic maniac screaming at invisible demons while high on meth soaking in his own piss and shit would definitely have an apartment and be just a regular guy like you and me
>>221192863Trump literally ruined these places by driving everyone there completely insane. Now we have to let junkies shit in the street cause Trump would want the opposite. Surprised they haven’t banned sobriety since Trump is a notorious teetotaler
>>221194501Radio was still pretty big in the early 90s, but it was nearing its twilight with the rise of the internet.
>>221194502>Clearly rent is too high. If it were 30% cheaper the schizophrenic maniac screaming at invisible demons while high on meth soaking in his own piss and shit would definitely have an apartment and be just a regular guy like you and meLmao I love this song and danceCan't just say some people are worthless violent drug addicts
>>221194501He had a successful practice before that and he was a local celebrity, his name carried some cachet, opened the doors of exclusive boites, got the best seats at the opera, his face was on busses and benches.
>>221194173sure they did...
>>221191626how was vancouver in the 90s? Did it have a rivarly with Seattle? What was it like before it become hollywood north/ poormans kuala lumpur?
