They went back and looked at the responses that they gave in relation to when they ended up dying. Something insane like 95% of them reported seeing visions of dead family members talking to them, visions being specified as distinct from mundane dreams. There were some other odd phenomena that was highly correlated with oncoming death. People who have experienced near death experiences and returned to the world of the living say that the dying process is actually completely painless. One woman went over a waterfall in a kayak and flipped over, mangled her body, and drowned to death. She revived a little after her friends got her out of the water and she later said that she felt absolutely no pain going over the waterfall, she just whooshed out of her body like it was nothing. One guy got hit while he was driving a motorcycle and reported the same thing, he just floated up out of his body and watched the collision from a bird's eye view.Seems to me like God makes the dying process as gentle as he possibly can for us and sends our loved ones to prepare us for the transition when it starts to be our time.
