Essentially, boarding houses were basically the equivalent of a short term apartment or cheap hotel, with shared bathrooms, and week by week payment. There were no long term lease requirements, so no need for references or a credit check. Basically, you paid a deposit up front, and could get kicked out quickly if you didn’t pay, but you had the advantage of leaving if opportunities came up elsewhere, such as in a different city, or just better accommodations, or a decent apartment. Boarding houses usually came with furniture, so you didn’t need to arrange for moving furniture. If you didn’t like the other boarders, you could leave. If you were a pain in the ass, you would get kicked out, and would go to a different boarding house, until you pissed off most of the boarding houses in town. Boarding houses basically got replaced by short term cheap hotels, which rented rooms by the day or week, or sometimes month. The weekly rate of these hotels ads up to about what a crap apartment would cost per month, or maybe a bit more, although usually with less space, and less stuff like refrigerators or stoves, although there are hotels that have those. Generally, people who stay in these are usually a bit broke, and therefore potentially a bit sketchy, but it is still sort of necessary in society, and it’s usually somewhat less sketchy than airbnb s where people throw parties snd annoy neighbors, sine a boarding house owner would get shut down for letting crap like that happen.
