Who was in the wrong here?

tony, who gives a shit what happens to a bunch of protozoa over a billion years compared to the last 250 years of humanity
>>
I agree with Chris. Who gives a fuck about the protozoans and little cell life forms that were doing things before we were around, I don't care to think about a world without Humans either. We are collectively the main character of earth and when a human isn't on screen Martians should be asking "Where's the humans? We need them"
>>
we went from some paper and twine bullshit thing skipping a couple feet of the ground on a field in ohio in 1903 to walking on the moon 63 years later.

christopher is right

Viewing things from this universal reference frame, which is what Tony is trying to do, seems at first glance to be philosophic and introspective, but is ultimately the annihilation of meaning that makes for a detached and barren existence. It's telling that, in this scene, he uses the universal frame to liberate himself from his woes for a brief moment, but this stratagem could also be employed, just as deftly, by a dictator looking to excuse himself for the wickedness he has perpetrated unto the undeserving. "Weep you may for I have slain your kin, but pause and reflect, that you are but an ant on the face of the cosmos! Thus, isn't your suffering also without meaning?"

Certainly, in that time no other intelligence near ours has had time to exist, right? No we are the only special boy...

It doesn't matter how you feel. You are still irrelevant.
Eventually you will die and is like your post on 4chan never existed

Define "insignificant"
>>
The fact that Humans have only been around for a 'comparatively' short amount of time in the grand scheme of things, that does not equate to Humans consequently being "insignificant".
I don't buy into the argument that Humans are "insignificant" due to their comparatively small existence within the total span of Earth or the solar-system or all time itself or whatever for the same reason I don't buy into similar argument that we're "insignificant" due to the comparatively gargantuan physical size of the universe. Oh, wow, so there are SUPER HUGE things like stars in the universe and Humans are super super tiny compared to them? Oh, wow, so Humans have only been around for a comparative little "blip" of time in the span of the Earth, and we're predated by several billion years of history prior to us even existing? Big fucking whoop. Who cares?
Humans are, at least as far as we know, the "biggest deal" in the universe so far and one of the only things worth caring about. When's the last time one of those stars cured a disease, like Smallpox or Polio? When's the last time one of those Protozoa that existed for billions of years before Humans did ever wrote a beautiful poem or painted a beautiful picture or did anything that could be considered even remotely intellectually OR spiritually significant? Yes, stuff exists outside the Human-scope of both scale and time. A lot of it. But it's a whole lot of nothing fucking significant.

The party didn't even get started until Humans arrived. And at least as things currently stand, the party would be over the second we were gone. Until further evidence to the contrary is presented, Humans are the "big deal", and the only "big deal" so far.

To what? According to who? By what metric?

Correct

insignificant doesn't mean unimportant

To think that because we have only existed on this planet for a short time in the grand scheme of things makes us and our lives insignificant is a stupid worldview only thought of by misanthropic losers. So what? There's no reason to believe that makes us insignificant. If anything, you could flip that belief and just as well think it makes us incredibly significant. All those millions of years have lead to us and in the brief time that we have been here, we have conquered and tamed the planet.
