The animation and atmosphere are incredible, the voice cast is good -- so why did it flop? For my money it's too short, it needed another ~20 minutes to shore up the characters, especially once they get to Atlantis.
>>221197233I think it didn't make enough money. Too boyish for Disney or some shit like that
>>221197233They got a cease and desist from MGM for stealing the plot and characters of Stargate.
>>221197233The whole idea came from Nadia which was created by Anno who got the story outline from Miyazaki in the mid 70s who was inspired by Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the SeaMiyazaki reused elements from his concept in Castle in the Sky tooJapan was too afraid to try suing Disney lolAlso a guy marries a loli at the end of Nadia
>>221197233Not very smart to release it on the same day as Tomb Raider movie
>academy introduced the Best Animated Feature category in 2001>Disney didn't submit Atlantis, so it didn't stood a chance of being among the 3 nominees
>Why did it fail? You can ask that about every good film ever that flopped.pic related another example, I blame marketing
>>221198464>comes out shortly after Antz and A Bug's LifeI think this flopped because people found the animation style too basic
>>221198464Marketing and a little arrogance from the filmmakers. They literally said "we want to change perceptions of Atlantis" that's not exactly how art works. You make the art, we react, and then perceptions change. If you want to lead someone to a conclusion, you have to start where they are. A Jules Verne movie is fine, more than fine. It's a great film, but not what was advertised. Marketing naturally leaned into the idea of Atlantis as - you'll never believe this - an underwater environment. The submarine played a huge role in marketing and merchandise. Marketing therefore set them up to fail harder, but it's not entirely the fault of marketers or audiences. A couple more submarine scenes and underwater scenes would have saved their bacon. I've posted my idea before, just have the sub survive the battle and make contact at the end. Milo and Kida can use a forgotten atlantean secret passage through the volcano wall to the ocean, in a new atlantean vehicle with enclosed cockpit. Not rocket science here guys.
>>221197233Helga is fucking hot. Didn't deserve to die.
>>221197233>Why did it fail?It was a weird transition period for animation. The Disney Renaissance was over, so studios weren't producing the same musicals and children-oriented films. CGI and more comedic movies were the rage, and anyone still working on traditional animation hadn't quite figured out how to make successful adventure family movies (Titan A.E., Road to El Dorado, Sinbad and the Seven Seas, Treasure Planet). Most of these still had toys and extensive marketing, but were too action and adult-oriented for younger kids (especially girls) but still too childish for teenagers and young adults in a way that Shrek wasn't.
>>221197233whoo cares I love this movie
>>221199082>SinbadThat's one of DreamWorks' weakest
considered too mature by pearl clutching normalfaggots
>>221199212And? How is that a rebuttal of what I said?Sinbad was based, just a bit undercooked.
I was obsessed with this movie and the visual guide was fucking kino
>>221197233The first half of this movie is amazing and then the not sha're shows up
>>221197233Because hollywood and box office really wanted to gangstalk Dobson
>>221199265The Crystal Chamber scene is cinema. The music gives me chills.pls no bully, I am not a faggot or plebbitor
>>221199344No we didn't
>>221199265>>221199395The world is literally getting worse every single year
>>221197233I recently rewatched this movie. The first half is so good and the second half, once they get to Atlantis, is terrible
Atlantis came out almost 1 month after the first Shrek. People were still blown away by that CGI, so Atlantis didn't look interesting to them
>>221197233It's in the weird middle ground between an adult adventure movie and a children's cartoon. It definitely felt too dark and drab for me, when I watched it as a little kid.
>>221199265I distinctly remember the game tie-in. The cereal box version was a demo (with its own special title for some reason) that promoted the full game called "Trial by Fire"
>>221199436welcome to the Kali Yuga, brah
>>221197233The visuals and character designs are stellar and it sets up very well but the plot was kind of... stupid.
>>221199495whoa, almost forgot about that. I vaguely remember some FPS style gameplay in the Iceland prologue or something when the team finds the journal. didn't it have an extended version of the Viking scene from the trailers/movie?Atlantis really was far more based than we deserved. I hope you shitheads are happy Disneyland has the Finding fucking Nemo ride as a 20000 Leagues replacement instead of Atlantis
>>221197233I found it very simplistic and perfunctory, even for a kid's film. I like Michael J. Fox, but hated his casting in this. Ironically worked about as well Eric Stoltz in Back to the Future for me:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KA0lzIiRYsgThey should have changed him about as far in when it was obvious he wasn't working too.The rest is just some noble savage type bullshit. There's just nothing special or remarkable about it at all. Feels totally meh, even without the weak as piss carbon copy of the Stargate/Spader intro scene and character.
>>221199600midwit waste of dubs
>>221199756This might seem like odd timing, but I feel it's my duty to notify you that I fucked your mother.
>>221199784Dad, stop shitposting and get back to work
>>221197233I watched it at least twice and I can't even remember what happens once they get to Atlantis
>>221199972skill issue
>>221198661The memorial scene would be better if one of the crew shits on it and refuses to accept that they're dead. The grandma character should've "died" on the sub, then it turns out they survived by, I dunno, hiding in the cloud of mud kicked up by their wrestling with a primordial mech monster.
>>221198661>>221201343congratulations on making Hollywood writers seem good by comparison.
>>221201401congratulations on making "no u" seem unpredictable by comparison
It's visually interesting and the side characters have some good moments but Milo is a terrible protagonist, the plot is uninteresting, and the pacing is either too fast or wasted on irrelevant scenes. This and Treasure Planet aren't underrated gems, people appreciate the artistry but correctly acknowledge they're just kind of okay
>>221201406It was my pleasure.
>>221201520>Milo is a terrible protagonistwrong>the plot is uninterestingwrong>and the pacing is either too fast or wasted on irrelevant sceneswrongNeither accurate nor the reason it failed
>>221201523so are you retarded or just pretending ?
>>221201581>wrongwrong>wrongwrong>wrongwrongIt's a 5/10 movie
>>221197233The kino part (putting together the team and getting to Atlantis) is way too short.
>>221197895>Also a guy marries a loli at the end of Nadiano longer a loli at that point but still this was so out of left field that it genuinely shocked me, typical jap shit
>>221197895Anno didn't invent the concept of Atlantis having magical crystals. That came from Edgar Cayce. Also Disney was too busy ripping off Hellboy's aesthetics to ripoff Anno's Atragon with ancient aliens slop
>>221201596I'm not telling you.
>>221201831>Also Disney was too busy ripping off Hellboy's aestheticsthey hired Mignola for concept
not as good as Treasure Planet imo
>>221202030It doesn't matter.
>>221197233>>221197325It never actually flopped. It was only ever supposed to be a non-musical originstory of the Disney-verse mythos, which is a royalist european mythology based on how dynasties are the protagonists of European myth & history.Milo getting the book from "an old aunt" implying that he's the son of Tarzan as the brother of Elsa & Anna is a spoof of how JRRT and Christopher Tolkien was friends with Queen Margrethe of Denmark.tldr;Disney is just mason-schizo propaganda glazing european royalty, and when they got thumbs-down from Tolkien to buy his works, they just spoofed him instead.
>>221204115Nothing really matters, nothing really matters.....to meeeee

>>221202043After they had already started dissecting his style. When Mignola arrived at the studio, he was greeted with diagrams on the walls breaking down how he draws hands.
>>221199600came here to say this. the plot was basic. atlantis was advanced because they had...jetskis? probably failed because it was pro-immigration. now that I think about it, atlantis was just wakanda before wakanda
>>221204667Crystal nukes and flying fish cars
>>221204340Consider *strong* medication. And therapy.
>>221197233>Why! Why did it failI don't know, anon. You tell me.

>>221198836Agreed
>>221205556MOLE
>>221199600You sound like a complete retard. Those criticisms are pulled out of nowhere, obvious rationalization for your feelings. Implying you wanted a different VA for Milo is the icing on the cake though.
