Was Apu really perceived as a negative representation of Indians in 2017?
>>221198874Apugate indirectly resulted in a tsunami of streetshitters showing up everywhere that isn't India. Fuck this "documentary".
>>221198874NoAll claims of racism are cynical and mercenary
how is this shit still bothering you?
>>221198874yesif one person did then it's true, so wasted question
The worse part is that swarthy kike (apu va) who apologized for whites stealing color ppl jobs
>>221198874Be honest /tv/ did this special make you more racist?
>>221198874>this guy managed to single-handedly throw over a billion people under the busquite the achievement
>>221198874
>>221198874Apu always felt like an accurate portrayal of Indians in America society. Even in my small town there are multiple convenience stores similar to this operated exclusively by Indian immigrants. It's not a negative portrayal but just more of a stereotype based on reality. Apu is just a typical reflection of how Americans perceived Indians mostly based on facts
Apu was a reasonably respectable man surrounded mostly by idiotic white people. It was literally the best representation they could have asked for.The problem is a lot of Asian immigrants are more like Khan in KotH (I know he's a different kind of Asian). Clannish, class conscious, and weirdly presumptuous about their own superiority.>Fuck you sir! I don't work in Kwik-E-Mart! I am med student! We be running your country in ten years! That's where the seethe was coming from.
>>221198874probably, an honest hardworking guy who tries to integrate into the country legally after his student visa expired. It's bad izzat
>>221198874That documentary is the exact moment racism against Indians took off in America, before that people thought of Indians as nice, hard-working people that causes no trouble.
>>221198874No, but I was in elementary school in the 90s and anyone indian or middle eastern was bombarded with "Thank you, COMEAGAIN" in bad accents
>>221198874at least that comedian got a career and global fame out of it, right?
>Oh no—We need indians and other asians and arabs to work in gas stations in food desert areas who else will
>>221200661You must be British, I have never heard an American refer to Indians or anyone of Desi ethnicity as Asians ever and we always consider them a different race than say Chinese,Japanese or Koreans
>>221200731This. The entire documentary is Indian millenials being sad that they were called "Apu" as kids.
who is trusting and funding these idioterts
>>221200818They come from the continent of Asia. This isn't all that out there of a thing.
>>221198874Not at all, but since the creator is a brown person critiquing whites, "the industry" is going to promote him
>>221200892It is though they're a completely different race to asians
>>221198874nope, this is one of those cases where blue haired trannies in California decided to be offended on behalf of brown people without asking them first
>>221200948They are Asians, because they're from Asia, and they've been there for thousands of years.
>>221200818Most British people don't call them Asians anymore, it's mostly boomers and only a result of the media
It's not anyone else's fault Americans decided "Oriental" was a racist term.
>>221200960You aren't asians, because you're brown and descend from a completely different group of peopleChinese people are asiansYou are brown
>>221200818So are you Chinese or Japanese?
>>221200990A lot of slant Asians are fully brown as well. Indonesia has a large Muslim population.
>>221201017They could be nordic pagans, we're talking about race
>>221201038So how is a race who've been in Asia for all of recorded history not an Asian race?
>>221200960Grouping people by mere geography seldom makes sense. Take somewhere like Egypt for example. It is technically part of Africa but would you really ever refer to Egyptians as Africans?
>>221201088North Africans. it's it's own thing. In short, yes.
>>221200304Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.-some broken buck
>>221201105This.Just watch a travel vlog of someone who has just been in Egypt to see the pyramids explain why he's never going back there, then compare stories of people who have visited Tunisia or Marrakesh. It's basically the same story. You won't have a moment of peace, you're constantly and aggressively harrassed to pay them or buy things on every step of your way, and those Nafris just won't take no for an answer. It gets so tiresome that even seeing one of the 7 wonders of the world doesn't seem worth the trouble in hindsight.
It's slightly ignorant to have a white guy do the "silly hindu voice". But at the same time, Hank Azaria is a tremendous voice actor, and the voice work is a huge part of the show itself. The character probably would have fizzled out quickly if it were just an actual brown guy speaking in his natural voice...But as a character, Apu was given the same grace as any other character in Springfield. There's literally an episode where he has to admit to Homer that he's an illegal immigrant, and Homer had no idea he wasn't American. Nothingburger. But came right in the eye of the Wokestorm, so this annoying little brown dude found his moment to pipe up about it.
>>221201288>It's slightly ignorant to have a white guyNot even that
>>221201288>The character probably would have fizzled out quickly if it were just an actual brown guy speaking in his natural voice...Yes. In that respect: I hate what they've done to Carl. He used to have this funny, dorky voice which fit the character. Now he's voiced by a total serious black voice actor. He's no fun anymore.
>>221201206When I was a kid the teachers at my school had the brilliant idea of doing a school trip to Egypt. They never did this again because the Egyptian men were constantly propositioning the kids for sex. And not just the girls, the boys too.
>>221201301yeah, it's silly we've now politicised cartoon voice acting to the point that actors aren't allowed to act, or do silly voices, which is kind of the entire pointYes, Apu is a caricature of how white people see Indians. Yes, it's funny. No, it's not "racist", because it's not implying there is something inherently wrong or inferior about being an Indian(although Indians on social media and scam calls being uploaded to youtube have now popularised this perspective).I mean, what are we trying to create here? A world where you can't depict or talk about a different group of people? Why?I agree that there can be a certain level of malice which is crossing a line, but that's not what this was.You have to put your foot down at some point and tell people that it's not an offensive thing, actually.
>>221201085Because you are brown and distinct from those we call Asian you fucking idiot
>>221201429Man, that's grim. And Egypt relies on tourism. I don't know the percentage of their GDP, but they don't have any industry or oil. They have the fees from the Suez Canal, some agriculture, and tourism.
>>221201517
>>221201643Those are asians. You are Indian. What part of this confuses you so much?
>>221201678where do you think India is?
>>221198874No, it was one Indian incel who seethed over harmless stereotypes and now Indians are perceived 100 times worse as literal shit eating demons that’s only know how to rape, scam and lie.
>>221198874I go to any number of my local convenience store and see him everyday. The safe edgy emo fag that had a problem with it is a fag.
>>221200818Asia is not a race. You're thinking of mongoloids.
>>221201288>It's slightly ignorant to have a white guy do the "silly hindu voice".I wouldn't even entertain that nonsense. Azaria wasn't cast as Apu because they thought he was better at sounding like a jeet than an actual one. They didn't cast him to make fun of them either. He was Apu because he was already voicing a dozen other characters on the show. Almost all of the recurring characters are voiced by a small handful of people, including some of the leads: https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/tv-shows/The-Simpsons/ Primetime animation was rare and Fox was a new network. It made little sense to dump loads of cash into casting a bunch of different actors for the supporting cast. This could've changed once the show became hugely popular, but why bother messing with a winning formula? Especially once the actors switched from a traditional pay structure (per line or per hour) to an annual salary. That's probably why Azaria was quick to grovel, because he was getting paid the same to do less work.
>>221200356It made me hate whiny entitled second-generation immigrants if that's what you mean.
>>221201088>Grouping people by mere geography seldom makes sense. Then don't.>Take somewhere like Egypt for example. It is technically part of Africa but would you really ever refer to Egyptians as Africans?Egyptians are Africans. North Africans. They're not Subsaharan Africans, but they're Africans. In fact, even now, most of Africa's history, as far as what has been written down, is from the the north or the Maghreb. If you wish to specify a certain people from a certain region than do so. Don't make that region an arbitrary default when there's a whole other side to the landmass.
>>221198874He just wanted to be hired to do the voice instead of the white guy who did it at the time. Instead they deleted Apu entirely.
>>221201918Lol you don't need to link me. I'm very aware of who does the voices on one of the biggest TV series of all time. It's very clear it wasn't meant to trash indians. Especially considering the way the character is used - he's literally just one of the guys. Yes, he has a different flavour with the arranged marriage, etc. and plays into the stereotype of managing a convenience store. But his character is handled with as much grace as any other male character in town.Hank does funny voices, and probably did his hindu voice for laughs before the character even existed.
>>221198874Nothe retarded admitted he just wanted to get famous and was upset that he would get 'more laughs' at shows doing Apu immpressions than his own 'stand up'Apu is probably one of the only decent human beings in Springfield
