Dancer In The Dark & Breaking The Waves are kinda sad if you don't like innocent females suffering. (Of course some people don't mind that. And LvT is so OTT and manipulative you might just end up laughing anyway.)

The Age Of Innocence is extremely downbeat, in an understated way.

I think a film has to be really good to be really sad. Of course less-good films can be tearjerkers, but deep melancholy is hard to achieve. First you have to actually care about the characters. And second you have to end up believing that in some way life is really like this.

Cries and Whispers (Bergman) is pretty depressing. Two nasty sisters, one nice one. Guess which one is dying of cancer?

Tokyo Story is very sad, in an understated sort of way.

In The Mood For Love: more understated melancholy. Like The Age Of Innocence, it's all about the regret for what might have been but wasn't.

This is definitely a top contender for one of the saddest things I’ve ever seen, aided by the fact that it’s actually a mini series of stand-alone short stories that are roughly an hour long but holy crap is it complete depression fuel. Every single episode is soul crushing but it’s brilliantly done, the visual storytelling is unprecedented and the way everything vaguely connects really ties the whole show together in a compelling way.

Child’s Play. You’re seeing a child slowly having his innocence ripped away from him forever. That final shot of him looking back at the charred remains of Chucky as he closes the door represents him looking at his ruined innocence and closing and door on the part of himself that is gone forever. Shit’s deep. The original Toy Story is deeply depressing too when you really watch it.

Good Time
Grave of the Fireflies
Manchester by the Sea
The Rover
Dumbo

These are subjective, I think what makes you feel sadness is even more specific to you than what makes you feel happiness
I instantly completely lose any ability to feel sadness when it feels forced or feels like miseryporn, I tend to get feels when I read into something a lot or if I realize too late that I relate to it personally. Looking up 'sad movies' or whatever is gonna turn up exactly zero movies that would make me feel things
Man on Fire got me pretty good when I first watched it, there's just something about people who have stopped believing in themselves finding it easy to believe in others, especially innocent and bright people. And anyone going to their death with a smile is a big deal to me if it's written right

Child actress Judith Barsi, who played Anne Marie, was killed in an apparent murder-suicide by her father over a year before All Dogs was released. Bluth recalled that the animation team was too upset to work on scenes involving Anne Marie for two weeks after Barsi's death, as animating required them to listen to cassette recordings they had of her voice. Burt Reynolds apparently needed over a dozen takes to say his goodbyes in the final scene because he kept breaking down crying.

Not him, but he's right. It's hard to feel sorry for the kids when the boy is so frequently ruining his sister's life that it almost feels deliberate on his part. Yeah, it's sad when the sister dies, but it's hard to emphasize with the boy when he fucking killed her.

That's what makes it so sharply tragic for me. What does a young man feel when he sees his younger sibling get hurt and suffer? Forget pain, forget fear of being told it was your fault- the main fear is that you will naturally put that guilt on yourself. Forever. There is no pivoting to 'It was war, it wasn't your fault, you were too young to know what to do' because he simply fucked up really badly and he has to live with that. THAT is what makes it so sharply painful. I haven't cried in years, I'm not a self pitying kind of person, but the idea of my sheltered little siblings getting hurt instantly undoes all the numbness I have and makes me think I need to tamp down my emotions. I love this movie because it's brutally human, and yeah it does piss you off but it's when you understand it fully that it only makes you feel pain and sadness

You can't really go wrong with a Song Kang-Ho movie, A Taxi Driver also made me tear up a bit.

The only thing that made me cry this year, was expressing to a friend how much I care for him and every advice I give to him is because I want him to get better. I started crying because no one has ever said something similar to me for my whole life, not even my parents.

Leviathan wasn't sad, just depressing, unfair and boring. Also half of the time people are drunk and having drunk arguments.
It's hard to feel sad when at some point you simply do not care anymore.

The part where he breaks down sobbing on his friends couch. Also, the movie ends with the kind of bleak admittance that he'll never truly be able to get over his grief and trauma.

I mean, that's just true. You don't get over grief.

Tennyson once wrote—and I won't claim it's among his best lines, but—:
>Let Love clasp Grief lest both be drown'd
This line seemed to me at first a little awkward because clasping another person while drowning is a great way to drown both. There is some excuse for it however.

Each, on its own, fades. Love and grief are equally forgotten in time. They persist only by an active supporting each of the other: we hold onto grief because it is the only way to preserve our love which has lost its object and will otherwise 'drown'.

Drowning matters here because these are the uncreating waters, the waters at the beginning and the end. These are the "waste sad time, stretching before and after". This is the continuing, infinite, empty time, absent the beloved; a particularity, having existed for a moment only, dissolves back into the stream.

Who can accept that? We struggle against this as long as we are here. Our love is in eternity, not in time.

This would be a more meaningful interaction if you had come up with it yourself, or at least edited the text afterwards so it's not immediately obvious you asked ChatGPT what to say.

The Professor and the Madman (2019)
I start blubbering like a child when Penn tells Gibson he doesn't want to be his friend anymore.
