It's more mystery suspense than supernatural horror but it's pretty good and I've been shilling it since 2024. It's less 'funny' than Widow's Bay but it's just as good if not better as a complete season.

I think they dropped the ball on communicating the high stakes of the storm. It felt a bit silly at times having everyone down in the bunker for what was only portrayed as some hard rain that Loftis and Bechir had no problem driving through to get to Ruth's. They probably just didn't have the SFX budget for it but it would have been better if it was more obviously biblical in scale.

the finale fucking sucked. Nothing happened and it was all just a big cliffhanger for season 2, which will be trash and I'm not watching. I genuinely can't believe how badly they fucked this up.

Ruth being Evan’s grandmother was hinted at in a previous episode when Tom tells his son about the letters his mother wrote (secret mommy). The writers already intended for this reveal by that point.
On rewatch it becomes clear that the founder and his people are not the original islanders and something happened to the original settlers that Tom knows about and wants to cover up, not just to the reporter and tourists but to everyone. The founder says there weren’t even vermin on the island, so maybe the curse wiped/ate ALL life for some reason. Seriously, go back and watch the early episodes. Every time the original settlers are mentioned it’s immediately swept under the rug in haste as if to cover up for something.

Demon is satiated enough to ease up on the storm, but it'll start up the monster of the week stuff again in a few days/weeks/months when it wants the rest of its sacrifices. It won't go to sleep for years/decades until it gets the proper amount it asked for.

From what Warren describes, the island was fine before an especially bad winter which made it so there was a severe lack of food. And shit like the fog and other stuff didn't start happening until Warren made the deal with the demon, and the deal only happened after he got desperate and ate the mushrooms during said winter. So people being locked to the island, and spooky shit like ghosts, should all stop coming when the deal ends (whether it be the descendants dying, or a way to kill the demon is found). Only thing up in the air is if the island was so inhospitable during the winter that it forces everyone to flee the island if the deal ends, or if it's something modern technology is able to overcome.

Mostly no notes on the show.

But the one note I would give for the show moving forward is toe make the son more likeable for dramatic tension so we actually care if he dies or not. Like I get why they didn't go too far with in in S1 as not to spoil the end but going forward they need to make him more likeable and not so fucking annoying. Because right now people either don't care if he lives or dies or they actively want to see him dead. Maybe give him some agency in S2 by having him do something heroic or something I dunno. Just make him not so fucking annoying moving forward.

Also another note for the show moving forward into later seasons is to be doubly viligant of avoiding the trap of becoming self referential. Like the show right now is about something. It is about horror tropes and riffing on that. But too many times something goes on for so long and starts eating its own tail by becoming self referential and making jokes or bits about itself instead of the thing the show was originally about.

I call it the Austin Powers effect. Like in Austin Powers 3 I knew it was over the minute they had Tom Curise playing Austin Powers. That was the moment I knew it was over because it was now riffing on itself instead of riffing on James Bond and spy tropes.
